HID Headlights
I recently purchased a set of 8" H4 head lights and now I am thinking about going to HID's in them as opposes to the stock H4 bulbs. Does any one have any experience with this type of conversion? How do you handle the need to have high beams to pass inspection. I have seen an number of HID kits for sale in price ranges from relatively inexpensive to way up there. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I bought a Hi/Lo HID kit that "pivots" the bulb to provide high beam. They actually work surprisingly well. Note for others - I don't recommend trying HID with US (H5) headlamps. The beam pattern is too diffuse.

I'm still running them (and satisfied, although the "reflector shift" high beams don't really adjust the beams much) 5+ years later.
Agreed. Diffusion is even quite apparent with the H4s, but (IMHO) acceptable as long as they're aimed carefully.

Because of the 'trim' that HIDs end up with, I can not imagine that HIDs would be any better than my 8" H4's..I get a great strong CORE of light, and a ton of very useful peripheral light, up and sidways quite well.
Havent seen an HID setup that doesnt have that sideways z cutoff in the US yet.
My BMW bike has HIDs in euro lenses..that sweep up and OUT nicely..but thats differn't

I never figured out exactly what's moving on my set - the bulb or the reflector/shield. But the effect is rather pronounced on mine. The high beam seems to light up the universe whereas the low beam is pretty close to standard H4, although the cut-off top edge is not as clean. And mine is a rather cheap set off eBay. I've had it for 4 or so years with no issues, not even with a bulb yet.

They work great.
1/2 power drain than the H4s as well.
However, they get wired in such a way that the drivers side headlight plug is not used. So the Fog relay does not engage, because it is not supposed to, if a healdight bulb is burnt out.
Soution was to add a dash ilumination bulb to the drivers side Connection.
The dash bulb has enough resistance to make the fog lamp relay engage.

RC'S comment on the fog light relay I take is a reference US models. Mine is a Euro and my fogs work differently than the US cars I think. I also have a second set of narrow beam driving lights that come on with the high beams, also as flash to pass. Does anyone know if that will present any problems.
From the comments it looks like people are happy with HID's and the lower power draw sounds like a positive I had not planned on.

there are dozens of stores selling conversion kits for any bulb you have, you choose the color temperature you want for any of the bulbs. Most cheap kits are china or tiawan but still work well. You can also change the small marker or parking bulb to LED and find the same color match to the headlights.
