Hoping someone can help. I acquired a Porsche 928 S4 (1989) about a year ago and have noticed an issue on longer drives. There is heat and hot air coming from the ashtray, shifter and center console (by power window buttons). It doesn't really smell..but is constant and you can feel the hot air flow (as opposed to just warming of area). This usually happens when driving 30 or more miles (even steady highway cruising). Is this the motor mounts? If so, does anyone know what I would expect to pay for having these changed out at a shop? Thanks in advance.

Old sagging motor mounts and/or crumbling shifter surround insulation. The latter is quite rare especially on an '89, so it's probably the former.
To replace the motor mounts, the engine must be supported from above so that the engine crossmember can be removed. The steering rack also has to be suspended out of the way. It is a crappy dirty job and if you have a shop do it, it will probably cost more than $1k. Also, they will probably insist on using the Porsche hydraulic mounts that cost ~$300 each last time I checked. While that work is being done, the oil pan gasket really should be replaced as well, since all that labor must be done to get at it and the gasket is cheap.

Doing a search for threads with hot air from center console (spelling matters) in the title finds this gem:

So, how are your motor mounts?

I'm in the Monte Mira community at the top of Skyloft - the west side. Been there going on 18 years.
Come on over for cocktails on the patio sometime.

Southern California 928 owners are amazing
. Several years ago, we had gatherings several times a year, but it seems like everyone is busy lately. See you all at Sharktoberfest '11![thumbup](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/thumbup.gif)
