Default Pull engine or not?

84S US. I posted an earlier thread where I had coolant in oil and coolant in intake valves. I found the coolant was only in number 1 and number 5. I obviously need to pull the heads at this point. I have off all week and cant get to a cherry picker till saturday. I heard the heads can be removed while engine is in car. But one problem, I really wanted to change my oil pan gasket too. I already replaced torque tube bearings and engine mounts. What do you guys think?

Pull the engine NOW , once you take off the heads it is real hard to put a chain hoist onto the engine if it needs to come out.

I agree with Jim, it takes about the same ammount of time to pull the cam cover off as it does to pull the whole engine any way. I think you can purchase a hoist from habor freight fairly resonably also. If you do need to wait untill Sat to rent one, you can get 99.9% of the engine ready to pull by then.

the coolant on top of the valve indicates a cracked head, pull the engine,
drain the block first, then you can fix all the other things easily and in the long run you will save time and possible damage to the paint on the fenders

+1 to everbody here. It's already basically wednesday. Spend the rest of your available time getting all of the connections undone and everuthing spiffy. Saturday you can do the final "pull" and the bonus is all of your repairs will go like 200% faster. I know where you are coming from; you just have to get past the intimidation of a major operation like an engine pull. You have asked a lot of good questions; take pictures to help yourself how everything should look when you put it back and go for it lad! We are to "virtually" watch and offer tips when your repair is done. Trust everyone here when we have collectively said to pull the motor. You will save time in the end by far.

Hkp7, did all 4 of the water bridge bolts snap off in the heads? Hard to tell from photo.

Also quick question on head removal, I have an old M28/03, passenger side head is stuck onto one of the upper studs, looks like corrosion is holding it in place. I can rock the head back and forth on the stud but otherwise it won't budge. How can I get it off?

fill the bolt holes with PB blaster and try rocking,
use a wooden stick tween the head and block so you dont damage the metal

Thanks, I never thought to use wood. Hopefully I can find something thin enough to fit in there.

Pull now! You're most of the way there anyway. Putting the intake back on when you can walk around it will be cake too.

And you'll earn bonafide man points.

Thanks for everyones replies. I started to clean all the parts I have removed so far. And for Opelotus's question, none of the bolts broke this time, I had the bridge off last winter, One of them broke but I was lucky enough to have the stud sticking out for channel locks to remove it.

You might get a kick out of this picture. I could have never done this if the wife was still here.
