I believe the difference is the S55/CL500/CL600 used a hydraulic suspension and the S500/S600 used the air suspension. The hydraulic system had allot of problems and the air system only had a problem with leaking front struts but that has been redesigned and the part has been updated. The replacements are expensive at $900 each but they do have a lifetime guarantee.

Anyone who goes to the dealer out of warranty is going to get raped... My local Canadian dealer wants $320 for the "A" service (AKA Oil Change) but If you changed it yourself it would be $12.95 for the filter kit plus 9 x $4.99 for the oil.

He had lots of problems with the S/C, cooling, and sensors.

All 2000+ CL's have ABC which is the hydraulic suspension. All 2000+ S55's, S65's, and S600's also have ABC.

A friend had an SL55 AMG and on more than one occasion he went out to his garage and the car looked like it was sitting on the floor in a pool of its own hydraulic fluid from that system! He sold the car in disgust!

Yep, the R230 SL's have ABC. I think the only one that does not is the SL65 black series.

Hi Raron,
I an totally understand your dilemma as I have often considered other toys. I have always admired the timeless look of the 928 but have recently been drawn to the CL55. You can pick them up for high teens and they also share the same engine as the S55 with 493 HP and 519 lb/ft torque. Good for 0-60 in 4.5 sec and also a potential daily driver. IMHO if you're looking for a toy then it should be something you really love and will enjoy it by just looking at it sitting in your driveway. It should stir emotion and provide fulfillment and satisfaction (pardon the hallmark moment). To me that would be the 928 even though other cars may be faster or more reliable or cheaper to buy. Just my 2 cents...

Well, I don't have a 500E, but my DD is a '92 300TE wagon with almost 250K on it. The fundamental platform is the same as the V8. It has a great chassis, very solid feeling. Nice long wheel travel soaks up bumps. It is very steady at all times, and does equally well at either low or high speeds (where the 928 is ponderous going slow). The transition from understeer into oversteer is nice and predictable, though it has tall sidewalls which would contribute to that. The ergonomics are better than the 928 for cruising (the 928 armrest and console end up biting into my legs in a long trip) but the 928 's is better for aggressive driving. It feels boxy compared to the 928 (obviously) but it has better visibility. The dash layout is attractive, and the interior holds up well. The straight 6 is nothing special, no pizazz. It has an off-idle hesitation that I can't seem to cure. The transmission sucks, the shiftpoints are just all wrong. I have tried adjusting the Bowden cable, but they are inherently wrong (both during upshift and especially downshift) to begin with. It has been very reliable, and I have beat on it pretty hard at times. I have even done a dozen laps or so at the local track (well, why not?) with it. Someone mentioned earlier about the 928 feels like a toned-down race car while the MB feels like a hopped-up streetcar. I have never driven a real race car, but I know that when I flog the Porsche it just seems to ask for more, saying "Cmon let's GO!" while the 300 is saying "Uhhh, what are you doing?" But of course it's a wagon, and not "hopped-up" in any sense of the word.
