Steve,

Great work! When all done do a write up using pics in Word (or whatever you like) and lets get it over to Stan for hosting on the 928 Owners Club site too!

My S4 has the same interior color as yours and I am heartened to see your carpets are as dirty and mismatching to the seats as mine are now days! I think they need to be completely pulled and SERIOUSLY cleaned! Linen is BEAUTIFUL but it is hard to really keep clean...just a few drives with the windows down and you can have it dirty!

Looks like you have the newer rear seat design, so console has to come up to get last bolt out. Earlier cars had a pin that fit into a bushing on the inside hinge, but the design changed. As Stan said in his post, the trick on the console is to pry the four upright metal bars away from the sides of the A/C evaporator box, then just work the whole unit up and off. I used a couple putty knifes and small screwdrivers to open these up so they let go of the evap. box.

OK to remove the console first at the rear of the center vent there are 2 screws remove them, then lift the rear vent up to 45 deg pull back

Then adjacent to where the little fingers went front of the rear vent , are 2 more screws possibly hidden by the console covering material remove these.

Then lift the rear edge of the top cover to 45 degrees then pull back. this removes the top console cover.

Then along the evaporater are 4 fine threaded screws holding the metal bars to the sides remove these only.

Then carefully pull the sides of the console apart as you lift the console upwards,
make sure to have the metal bars clear of the sides of the housing,
once they are clear then the console will lift off.

NOTE there is a metal rib along the rear edge of the console make sure to have this also clear the evap housing
IE lift the front of the console a bit higher and push it rearwards to clear the evap housing

Looks like I have to take out the AC console as Hilton stated. I have no clue how to do it.

Coincidentally I was removing the rear seat back from my 88 S4 last night around the same time as you. I first removed the outboard two allen bolts but could not slide the seat out as instructions from earlier versions indicated. I found the third bolt on the inboard side but clearly there was another one I could not see - just as you found. I removed the console (fortunately I don't have the rear a/c) and then it clearly visible. My seat backs are now out.

Just got back to this after yesterdays post. Yes, you need to remove the seat uppers completely in the later cars (85 onwards I assume - as thats when the front seats changed?).

That means getting to all 4 socket-head bolts, so the center console in the rear has to come out to get the two bolts you've spotted in the photo you included.

After that its very straightforward.

To remove the rear AC console, start with opening the rear hatch and look at the rear of the console. You will find 2 screws.

So I need someone to tell me where to find the anchor for the belt. A picture of that would be perfect.
If my 4 year old boy did not like the 928 so much that I would just dump the rear seats and the AC to make it a 2 seater.

You can feel it - its up in the C-pillar on the frame of the hatch. You screw the bolt in "upwards".

You'll feel a circular depression about 5/8" diameter. I'll go take a picture - I've got the quarter panels out of my '89 at the moment so it'll be of the actual bolt hole in the frame.

Here it is.. further back than I remembered That's the right-side quarter window.

I cut my rear quarter pillar using a box-cutter with a fresh blade - just poked it in the hole 4 times, from rough center outwards to make a + sign, and then pushed in each triangular tab.

If you don't have them, I recommend ordering the correct bolts, spacer rings, caps etc. from 928intl - the spacer rings are needed to push the metal tab of the belt end away from the quarter panel and allow some rotational movement.

Hilton, Thanks.
I do want to know if the factory cut the leather hole in a +/cross fashion or a regular circular hole.

Great write-up. Thanks for the thorough documentation. Does anyone know what model year they started adding the bolt hole for the 3-point belts? Was it always there? I'd like to do this update to my '84 when my girls outgrow baby seats, but not sure if I have the bolt mounting point. When I feel the C-pillar leather covering it does feel like there is a small opening in the right location.

Pretty sure it was always there. Australia had 3-point rear belts from at least 1982 on 928's, maybe earlier (you can check the PET part numbers and pictures).

From 1984 onwards, the rear belts all use the same style retractor, so you should be able to fit rear 3-point belts from a late US model to an 84. Earlier than that the retractor body is a different shape so may not fit the later belts.

Not sure what year, here's a pic of the earlier design showing the pin and bushing hardware they used at the time ...
