Exclusive model was basically group of options like basic full leather (instead of really full version where heater openings etc are all covered with leather) and wood pieces packaged as single option. For few years Japanise importer sold both regular S4 and S4 Exclusive side by side. From factory point of view they are just S4 with lots of individual options added on.
Extra rear reflectors low down were needed for Japanise marked to meet up some minimum rear lamp reflector area rule or some stupid local demand like that. I suspect they were installed to almost all period Japanise models as were those front fender extensions. In most cases they were lost early on as very few people seem to like them. Even I would get rid of those reflectors but would keep front fender extensions.
'90-91 GTS rear flares had separate X option than '89 XC1 round setup. Code is XG8. There were 70 in 1990 MY, 122 in 1991 MY. Quite a lot of them went into Japan. 15 '90 MY LHD, 50 '91 MY LHD and 5 '90 MY RHD. All automatics meaning S4.

The option for the Wide Body is XX8. It consists of the rear GTS flares and 43mm rear wheel spacers.
Worldwide, there are a total of 79 cars with the XX8 Wide Body option.
1 - XX8 USA 928 GT with the Wide Body.
16 - XX8 ROW 928 GT's with the Wide Body.
62 - XX8 ROW 928 S4's with the Wide Body.
79 - Total XX8 928 Wide Body's worldwide.
Of those cars:
50 - S4's went to Japan.
*9 - S4's went to Germany.
*2 - S4's went to South Africa (RHD).
*1 - S4 went to Belgium.
16 - GT's stayed in Germany.
*1 - GT went to the USA
In 1991 US dollars, XX8 was a $9,100 option.
Rumor is that 12 early production 928 GTS's had the XX8 option redundantly listed on their build sheet.
It is great to see a few of these cars being discovered and scooped up by enthusiasts!

Reason: correction
Greetings. Attached are a few photos of XX8 1991 928s in Germany with some interesting differences.

The 40th Anniversary of the 928 was Porsche's focus for the event.
This Exclusive 91 had a factory rear window washer.
According to the Porsche rep I spoke to, the root wood interior is what was installed at the Exclusive shop, not the fenders.
This 91 GT also had the XX8 fenders.
For 1991 some RoW 928s airbags and some did not, like this GT.
The crimson S4 beside it is also a 91.
The side moldings (on the fenders) were peculiar. Most XX8 cars seem to be without side moldings. Not sure if this was the factory solution for 91, or if this was customized later?
This is my 91 S4 with XX8 fenders. It is one of the Japanese cars obviously. According to the records at the Porsche dealer, the GTS rear bumper and mirrors were installed at the factory in 96. I would have preferred the original S4 mirrors and rear bumper covers, but this is what was available.
I've retained the Japanese market front fiberglass fender flares and lower rear reflectors, but prefer the cleaner look without them. And yes, those are real 8x16 ET60 Club Sport wheels in the front.
I like these wheels even more than the fenders.

If you don't have the VIN, it is really difficult to know if a car is an original XX8 (factory made) or not.
The example of the green car is good, because I agree with the Porsche rep, the rear fender are certainly not original.
I'm almost sure that this car is WP0ZZZ92ZMS801150, the first car with the XR7 (rear window washer) code.
20 cars were produced with this equipment, 3 1991 S4 (Germany only) and 17 GTS's ( 3 USA, RoW for the rest).

Which Japanese edition is your S4?
Hi. Apologies for the confusion about the comment from the Porsche rep. His comment applied to all the cars as he suggested XX8 was not an exclusive shop option, only the special interior parts. I didn't mean to leave the impression this was the definitive/expert view, just that one hears a lot of different things, even from Porsche reps.
You don't think the Green car has original XX8 fenders? I spoke with the owner, who claimed this was one of the original cars, but I didn't get to see the build sticker. If it is a later creation, they did beautiful work. I first saw the car five years ago at Spa-Francorchamps, before I knew about this option, and it caused me much confusion (airbags, fender flairs, and D90 wheels on a European 928 - what the heck is this?), but whatever it was I wanted one.

You came back from the future?

Correct about the rootwood interior. The challenge was that the inserts tended to warp as they dried after manufacturing, making many of them useless. The manufacturer went belly-up eventually. Now there is a different outfit in Germany that puts super thin wood veneer on plastic parts, at a much more consistent quality and durability.
What I find interesting about this car is the color of the interior. Granted, this was photographed through a (green) tinted window, but it is certainly not classic grey, and doesn't look light enough for light grey, either. I suspect this is in fact greygreen - a color that had been phased out years earlier (last offered in 88).
The other interesting detail here is the CD holder in the door panel. That's a very rare option, as is the rear window washer.
Classic grey is actually pretty dark. That one there is definitely classic grey with the slightest pink in the carpet that only that grey has. Love seeing these car! Anybody have more pictures?
Nicole, do you know who the original rootwood manufacturer was? The original center console pieces are beautiful (steam?) bent multi-plywood, I can imagine there must have been a lot of variation in the final shape.

I have a classic grey interior in my 928. This is nowhere near it. Also: Classic grey would not go with the green exterior.

No, I don't know.
I can ask my friend who worked in the Exclusive department at the time, but it's a long time - he may not even remember. In the end it probably doesn't matter a whole lot, since the company no longer exists.

No worries
It is sometimes difficult to know what is factory made and what is not.
Of course, an equipment code helps to be sure.
In this case, I haven't found a car with the XR7 and XX8 codes (rear window washer and GTS rear fenders).
But everything is possible with Porsche
And the PET also contains mistakes regarding equipment and/or kind of engine or gearbox.
