I have a bit of a strange problem. When backing out of the garage with the steering wheel turned counterclockwise to the stop I get a thumping noise from the rear of the car.
It sounds like a CV joint on a front wheel drive car except its coming from the rear of the car.
I straighten the car out, stay in reverse and it goes away.
Any suggestions besides calling an exorcist?

Thumping noise? Sure you didn't run over the cat?
I blew out a CV on my 944 once, sounded like a cow bell under hard acceleration.

Noise in reverse would be silence wouldn't it? ... sorry .. couldn't resist it
.
You're going to have to get the car up in the air to check everything at the rear end ... start with all the obvious suspension connection points, CV's, wheel bearings, tyres and wheels, so at least you can narrow the guess work down ... and go from there. Let us know what you find.

It did it this morning as I was backing out of the garage. Just pop pop pop as soon as I straightened out it quit. And... it hasn't done it again. I'll get it up on jacks this weekend and take a look.

Jack up the back and roll your wheel forward and then backward at least one turn each and feel for binding.
I would bet that You have a CV joint popping
You don't want to blow a joint at speed

take the car out and do a slow full lock turn in left direction. Maybe holding a little brake. Then do same turn in other direction. See if you hear the clicking. If you dont get anything do it in reverse. Full lock all the way in both directions. And try it holding brakes on.
This will put pressure on the cv and bind it and make the defect obvious. if its got a bad spot it will click every time it hits the spot.
You may have to have someone walk by the wheel and listen to determine which side the noise is coming from

FWIW when turning the steering wheel dont the hold it at full lock,
back off an inch otherwise your steering rack wont last as long the end seals will blow out
