I use my 84 as a DD in the summer, no problem.
I only drive it once a week in the winter, no problem.
as long as your cooling system is up to date, all the belts are good, no fluid leaks or just little bit
and you are good to go!

Used my 79 as a daily driver for 8 years.. then retired her with my current Boxster. Now she drives once every few weeks (not enough)... They prefer to be driven and in my experience have less issues when driven regularly.. though I did have a backup car if needed.

Drive like you stole it. Or at least drive it like you pay its bills. Just fix the stuff that could cause drivability issues, and move ahead.

928's make great DD as long as you have a backup car. I would never rely on one as my only vehicle, especially a recently purchased one that may need work. Many of the success stories of daily drivers here are from people who have fully maintained examples. Most, I'm guessing, also have a backup option even if they are using the 928 as their DD.
It's not really a question about the 928's inherent reliability. The question is more about your tolerance for any down time and ability to quickly repair or have the car repaired when there is an issue.

I drive mine everyday and is my sole form of transportation, rain ,snow and shine, it does not mater. When I purchased it back in Oct 28 of 2009 the odo read 78,875, as of today reads 91,689 and runs better each day I drive it. PORSCHE...THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE!

Had my 89 for 11 years now and 155K miles of its current 227K miles. So, you can surmise it's gets driven almost everyday. Once you understand the quirks of these cars you should not be afraid to drive it all the time. I support the statements that daily driving improves the breed.

Well it all sounds good to me. I really appreciate everyone's input. I am a car guy and always have been. The car mechanically is amazing. I also do all of my work myself apart from something that would need machine work. The steering rack will be fixed here very soon and door handle as well. Other than that i only have to chase down a few electrical gremlins. So it seems i will be driving this thing till the wheels fall off. Thanks again for the input. Happy new year to all of you!

My 86.5 is a DD. My plans were/are similar to yours, although DD status definitely expands project time. My advice: fuel lines, thrust bearing release (if it is an AT), and no ATF leaks onto the exhaust. 2 of those will kill you, one the car. Then work on the rest when you can, at least for me that is very rewarding, and I get to drive my Porsche EVERY DAY (commute part-time about 30 - 50 miles depending on if I feel like the twisties and there is gas in the tank). I find myself wondering sometimes, how does this thing keep going so well? But I do keep after the required, and I guess that's mostly what it takes. Take heart, enjoy, you have one fo the best of the best (hey, it is an 86.5!).

drive it !
make sure it is waterproof, as steamy windows will freeze on the inside in winter,
fixing a car that does not drive is almost impossible,
i can drive my riviera daily if i want, i did it the first year i had it to find out wat was needed to be done(almost everything ,but he never lette me down), he's 40 years old.
i bought my 84 porsche 5 months ago, did timingbelt and pump,(i could hear the pump) and only some elektrical issues. i drove in -10°C without any problems, started like a new car every time.
i bought a cheap motorbike (like new, extreme low miles, but old and unwanted) for daily when its nice weather.when the weather gets better i can fix the porsche if needed and use the bike.

I've been using my '82 as a DD to school for the past two years, it hasn't given me any problems and it puts a smile on my face everyday. As others have said if you see a small problem fix it before it becomes a major PITA!

Chris,
I put 30k miles on my 79 in the first 2 years of ownership. First I used a couple of weekends to do the important stuff like timing belt and water pump. After that I just would use like every other weekend or even one weekend a month to catch up on the maintenance. At this point, I almost have it perfect. I have owned it now for 6 years. It has been a great DD. The only problem is with the gas mileage. I should point out that mine was in pretty good shape to start with. The thing I love about these cars is that if you drive them, and keep up with the maintenance, it will last forever and also be dependable. It will cost you some $$$, but will pay you back every time you turn the key.
Welcome and best of luck with your DD,

These cars are old. Some things happen without warning and you need time and a warm place to work. We drive ours all year and it just started with a howling heater motor that will maybe tie the car up. Our kids are in from college and are using their cars. I'm driving the thing, but if the motor quits I'll have no defrost. I do my own repairs and have a heated shop and this issue still will foul me up.
A 928 with all the stuff up-to-date should be fine as a daily, but you are only one strange failure away from needing a back up.

Replacing the HVAC fan motor is only about a 2 hour job, including removal of the hood (as long as you have a helper for the hood).
