Default Easy Speaker Cover Removal Tool & Cheap Refoam

This definately applies to the '89+ 10 speaker system but I think it also works for all the door speakers since I think the covers are the same, YMMV. I used it to remove all 10 speaker covers on my '90 GT.

A paint can openner from Home Depot works great to pull off the speaker covers. It's curved at the end and it fits perfectly into one of the three slots on the speaker covers and the one bottom slot on the rear 6" woofer cover on the 10 speaker system. Earlier models have the woofer cover that secures with screws. Just make sure it slips in between the speaker and the cover and that you don't get it behind the speaker and break the plastic speaker housing. Gently pull out away from the housing so the tabs release and it will pop off, although you may need to go around to another slot to release the tab there as well.

I found some 4" speaker foam on Ebay for the front and rear speakers and did all 4 for $6.25 and the 6" woofer for $6.88. Item # for the 4" is 360332694579 and the 6" is 280539320151. There are several writeups here on rennlist on how to refoam so I won't go into that other than to say it made a big difference in sound quality and it's well worth the effort.

Yes but I pulled the speakers first and took measurements before starting my search. I looked at every site I could find that sells speaker foam and the best fitting are these that I found on Ebay. There are lots of different sized foam for both the 4" and 6" speakers. The 4" fit exactly as the foam I removed and the 6" are very close. Based on reading all I could find about refoaming I used Elmers glue.

Your paint can tool is also very useful for removing relays from the Central Electric Panel - just be sure to disconnect the battery ground strap first.

Fred,

You're saying the tool works on the tweet and mid door grills as well?
Lots of painting around the house lately, I've got a ton of those things laying around.

Chuck,

Yep, worked on all of them. The tweeter covers also have 3 indents just like the 4" midrange. The tweeters and midrange speakers in the door have the same covers as the ones found in the rear on the 10 speaker system.

FWIW, I was able to take mine off pretty easily with a small screwdriver. Key is finding the three slots and prying up gently ...

Just be certain that the grilles aren't the ones that screw off...

Wally, do you know what years the screw on grills were on? Don't want someone to break their covers trying to use this method. It may be that it only works for the '89+ 10 speaker system. YMMV
