Guessing any S4 motor will be fine, but you know about assuming!
Any S4 motor will work - you will need to remove the exhaust temperature sensors on cylinders 4 and 8 from the original engine, and install them in the threaded holes on the heads of the new engine (may as well install them in 3/7 like the factory bulletin says). All S4/GTS heads have the threaded holes, even ones before the ignition monitoring system was installed.

Good to know...I am not interested in the car in the least, but Howard is (or WAS) and it is just good to know for anyone who might call about the car.

I've seen this listed since late September on San Antonio Craigslist.

Good reason for that...new engine right out of the shoot is not for the faint of heart!

If you don't pick up one at 928 International, there is a fully sealed and updated S4 motor from an 87 for sale at Los Angeles Auto Parts on Ebay for $2999 or best offer. Everything has been replaced (gaskets, seals, WP, TB).

Thanks guys.
Going to let this one slide. Owner won't sell for less than $3500.
I'm looking elsewhere for another one that works!
If anyone knows of any reasonable '85 or newer 928s for less than about $5k, let me know.

Thanks,
Howard

You can buy mine for a little more. $5K gets you an S4. It'll need catchup but it starts every time.

I bought this car today for $2500. Got it home on a trailer a few hours ago. Big thanks to Jim D. (tmpusfugit) for helping me with the transport, loading, unloading, and evaluation after it we got it in the air.

The guy in Houston that bought it from the seller in San Antonio, has had it a month or two, but is in a bind and needed to get rid of it.

It's a fairly decent car. It's been repainted and while not even close to perfect, it looks real good from 10'. The car has all belly pans, service history receipts back to 05, original warranty manual with stamps from FL, and the 9 vol shop manuals (which I already have). The tires have a lot of tread and while the chrome 19" wheels are a bit blingy for me, better than stock I guess (anyone know what kind they are?). There's a stainless RMB (which hopefully will fit my 86.5 since mine is rusted out) and lots of shiny metal trim peices inside that I don't particularly like. Luckily they seem to pull off pretty easily. The leather is in decent shape with no tears or rips, and I really like the black and tan combo.

We put it up on the lift after getting it home and found that the clamp was unbolted from the flex plate and we could not detect any end play movement. The car turns over, but does sound a bit slow and of course doesn't start. The engine has had some attentention, and is fairly clean. Intake and valve covers have been powder coated red.

Dash and pod are cracked of course, but not as badly as some I have seen. There's a stereo that looks pretty modern but no face plate. Steering wheel has been replaced with a small aftermarket one, and there's a receipt for $3000 front end body work (fender, lenses etc) so I guess there was a minor wreck, the airbag went off, and was never replaced?

Rack, oil pan, and transmission are all leaking (someone cranked the oil pan bolts way too tight and two are missing).

We spun the back wheels and they turn in the same direction, not opposite, so LSD?

Have all the option codes in the warranty manual, so will start looking things up.

Kindof funny after tossing some items in the rear, the rear hatch release motor started turning continuously. We could not find any stuck switches or wiring problems, so eventually had to pull the fuse.

I thought this might be a good car to drop a used engine in and resell, but I'm already starting to like it. If anyone has a used engine let me know. I know there are a couple on eBay. Might check around locally as well.

Registration is current, so the TBF must have happened late last year.

Will post some more shots later.

This car has lots of upgrades, including GTS mirrors, quite a few pieces from Jager Engineering, Rob Budd hood liner, and possibly clear lenses from my own store. I'm not sure, if I know the previous owner, but I certainly know the new one...

BTW: If this is an 89, then it never had an airbag. The elevated hub steering wheel option would not be available on a 90 or later US model.

Enjoy the car!

Great project. With decent paint and interior you will still be right side up after putting in a replacment motor. Plus, before you put the motor in you can do all the nice tricks like porkensionr, Constantine clamp, S3 cams, etc.

Default Just catching up but looks like you got a great deal!

Wish I'd seen this earlier but I was "detained" on the day job torture rack. You got a steal even if the engine is seized.

It will be interesting to find out what's exactly wrong.
