639 doesn't always make the code sticker. But a real 89GT will have M28/47 85K XXXXX on the engine stamp pad under the upper radiator hose, and G28.55 XXXXX stamped on the rearmost bottom rib on the tranny case. This is the absolute minimum due dilgence on ID'ing a GT.

More outlined here:

GT#s from a '90:

Engine # from a '91 GT:

Any '90/'91 5spd car IS a GT. A handful of '89 5spd cars are GT. NO automatic trans cars are a GT. All the Automatics ('87 - '91) are S4's...

This is a 89 5 speed car with a 220 LSD option code but I didnt pay attention to any of the other options to see if it is a GT. But it did have a Sport 3-spoke wheel too...... if that means anything..... and Heated/Power Sport seats.

None of those options mean anything...they can be on S4 5spd cars from '89 just as easily as on an '89 GT. An '89 GT is a pretty rare bird though, more than likely this is an S4, but if you got a GT, then you are a lucky guy. Oh, if the wheels are factory and are the Club Sport wheels then that would be an indication that you are PROBABLY dealing with a GT. The S4 5spd standard wheel would be the slotted dish wheels, those were NOT on the GT cars from '89 (AFAIK).

Here is an '89 GT with Club Sport wheels (and 329 ORIGINAL MILES too!)

Not much difference at all... Different cams give the car an extra 10HP...that is about it. Though some might argue that the engine differences go deeper than that and that the cars were very under rated. I think that is true with the EURO Club Sport cars, but I am not sure that carried over to the '89 GT.

89 GT is both rare and desirable, beyond technical stuff the difference is in market value, roughly a 1989 928

S4 Auto $10k
s4 5 spd $12k
GT 5 spd $15k

Prices are strictly for a relative comparison, but should play a big part in whether a car is restored or parted.
