Word of advice, expect to be lied to by owners or dealers. Both 928's I bought had TB/WP "done recently" and both cars displayed TB warning light about the 1st or 2nd time I drove them. The 1st one even had perfect glass and cold AC, but had a cracked windshield when delivered and you could toast bread on the vents with AC set on max. Basically, if seller doesn't have the paperwork to prove routine maintenance is up to date (which means well under 5 years on most items), then consider him to be telling you a damn lie.

Paperwork for TB/WP and other required maintenance done 10-20 years ago under PO's means not a damn thing to me. Recent up to date maintenance paperwork is what matters.

PPI's by qualified 928 guys will be the wooden stake in the heart of bull****ting sellers.

A good discussion on this car from March- Good advice. From talking to Greg and reading here, it looks like 5k plus of tb and misc. can be expected on most of these cars. Thanks for the help as I need to reserve this and not spend the budget up front. I'm now concerned with some of the other comments from March about 90-91 GTs trouble at the track. I DE all my cars at some point(cant refrain from the joy of Road Atlanta so close by). The track is no place for to find deferred maintenance. Does anybody know if there is a common theme- rear end? engine? gearbox? brakes. Thanks for your help sorting out in my mind the most important issues in my search.

The biggest issue is the 2 - 6 rod bearings during repeated track use due to oil starvation. These cars were more designed for autobahn cruising and not track duty. They can be run at the track, but if you get to the point where you want to track it all the time oil mods will have to be made.

+1 on the ads saying work has been done. Unless it is documented (especially a dealer car) I would price the car as if it needs it done. If I had the knowledge I have now when I bought my car, I would have whipped the PO like a red headed stepson!

Carl's car is a really nice piece and very well sorted. If he is still interested in selling I would put it on the top of your list. The first Autotrader link looks nice too if it checks out, it almost looks like a Rennlist member car.

If I were you I would seriously consider:

At $7500 you are already in good shape. The Guards Red paint can be buffed to look new and any chips can be cleaned up nicely with 1 or 2 products. The interior looks solid.

Sure it's not an S4--but you can use Porken's chips, a nice X pipe and a few other mods and be putting out 350+ HP without even adding boost. Add some boost and BLAM!

Speaking of Boost, If Pizza's 86.5 supercharged Auto (yeah not a 5 speed) is still around that'd be one to look at pretty seriously! It's a bargain based on the looks and upkeep. Plus it will probably keep up with almost any car out there today.

If Earl says "FULLY maintained" this car has been gone over more extensively than 99% of them out there. That insurance is worth the upper end of where you are price-range, IMO.

Earl sold his car this afternoon. Oh well , a little steep for me anyway. I have a body question. Looking at a car today both bumpers seemed to be off, a little hih here , too big of a gap there.l. These are plasticright? Do they deform easily. I may have been looking at a poorly repaired car. A PPI would catch but I'm trying to weed out the obvious problem cars. On PPIs, whats an average price? A good mechanic said it could be $1500 but its funny a seller said $200 should get it done.
Thanks again for your help and the cars that you have found. I'm checking them all out.

Anyone who doesn't have a good PPI performed by a QUALIFIED mechanic or 928/accomplished owner/mechanic is usually rolling loaded dice. For automatics, the PPI can get pricey checking the thrust bearing play. I also require and don't mind paying for a compression leak-down test. Some people didn't want their cars to be subjected to a good PPI for fear of possible scratches and bolts left loose. I understand that but I also didn't buy their car.

In searching for the P-cars I've purchased, 4 out of 5 were somehow misrepresented (and passed on). The money I've spent on PPIs and airfare/lodging to see a prospective car has always been money well spent. I've walked away from a lot of cars...and color is not really a factor for me (Although I did foolishly pass on a purple interior GTS once for a steal price and I'm kicking myself ever since!!!!! Grrrrr!!! I could have learned to live with that, I'm kinda sure).

There are a handful of Rennlisters that I've come to trust (even if I've not met them personally) that I'd not require the car to go through such testing...but it doesn't hurt to double-check. Sometimes cars have issues "lurking" that even the owner genuinely doesn't know about. Of course, when a PPI turns up something big, the owners always say, "Gee, I didn't know about that." And most didn't.

Since I know quite a bit about 928s (and 968s) my PPI requests are usually pretty specific to the not so easy to check stuff when I'm not in a garage. I've usually paid between $200-$350. And I've never not been able to recoup that money by talking the seller down a bit because of things found that should be corrected. So, really, they've usually not cost me anything. If you pay $350 for a PPI and can use that to lever the price down $900 for fixes...that's not bad.

On the other hand, when I sell a car, I usually get screwed.

PPI shouldn't cost more than $350.00. Did the mechanic mention what the $1,500 PPI includes?

Glad Earl found a buyer, nice cars deserve a good price. I'm not sure why I've had such bad luck with my car. Seems something always gets in the way. This evening a buyer called and my wife doesn't bother to get any information. Or I just get a buyer which can't come up with the funds but doesn't want to let the car go.

i gave him that price, it takes about two full days to do a complete full PPI, including a leakdown and a endplay check on a automatic.

That being said, most cars can be counted on not to make it more than a hour into my inspection.

As far as the price, well just look at Worfs PPI guide, you are doing a lot of work, for me to say it has a good timing belt and rollers, well i am going to have to spin the rollers, by hand, that means taking the belt off.

I will do as little or as much as the buyer wants, but you are not going to get a indepth PPI for 300 bucks from any pro 928 guy, simple as that.
