Empty shell to finished car
#886
Of all the projects out there that I wish I could adopt, this is at the top of the list, and mighty tempting given the spare engine and transmission I have sitting out in the garage. Alas, space, money, and talent are not in great supply here at the moment, but it's a little like buying lottery tickets: it's nice to dream a little bit.

I was interested in buying the project and returning it to stock configuration. Who doesn't want a Porsche 928 GT with GTS rear quarters?
That was until I got a PM from Carl explaining the steep climb that would be.

Kevin - that is precisely what the XX8 already is... only this one is new, has no sunroof and can be driven when it is finished...

I am amazed at the passionate response to this, and all the suggestions on how to keep the project alive. Thank you to all who reached out, it means a lot to me.
I am grateful for this as it has made me realize just how much this car means to me and how far I have already gone with it.
As a result, I have decided to hold on to the car and get going on the project again, albeit it will be with some fuzzy vision for some time.
A special thanks to Dave for his passionate encouragement.
Cheers!

Carl,
Glad to hear you are going to keep going. If you end up using the 6 speed brackets, have them bead blasted, and you will see that everything needs to be welded better, and also add some boxing and bracing, otherwise it will come apart on you under use.

Thanks Sterling,
I will take a peek when I get the car back up in the air. Waiting for the Quick-Jacks to arrive.
Are you referring to the black powder coated parts of the center cross member, or the mounting brackets with the rubber bushings?
Cheers!

its the center bracket that goes under the trans/diff. after getting the powder coating off, you will see how poorly they were welded, gaps, partial welds on one side and no 3d boxing or bracing. mine had gaps you could slide a dime between and very poor welds. mine wasn't even powder coated. it was rattle can wrinkle paint so it came off easy. powder coating will hide so much more. I just had to remove some powder coating and left the parts in a sealed can of lacquer thinner and it scraped right off.

Finally got the car up on the Quick Jacks a few days ago. Checked the area you described and all welds look well made, with no gaps, although on one side only The unit is definitely powder coated. I know mine was in the first batch made if that makes a difference? As you mentioned, it will probably still need some additional bracing.
I remember you building an amazing looking rear seat delete some years ago. Do you remember how much it ended up weighing? Do you by chance have any dimensions available as I would like to build something similar?
Cheers!
