20% sales tax does not help much.

It is all to do with volume - we buy more over here.

Hi

I wish I knew the answer to that but take my word, whatever you pay in the US is around HALF what I would pay in the UK...

An example...

I recently bought the 2 rear cork gaskets for the cam covers on my 16 valve... plus a power steering belt...cost from an OPC in the UK... JUST OVER £21 ! ($33)

I dont know what Roger would charge but I would bet its under half.....

All the best Brett

Get Rogers short shifter. You will have much less work, a permanent solution, better shifting, and you wont have to pay taxes to reimport something to Europe that was made there in the first place.

When you ship to Germany, they pay 5-10% customs plus the 19% VAT, even if the part originated from Germany.

Once it's above about Euro 35 or so, German customs has no mercy. And they are not fooled easily, either.

The main reason of higher price in europe is that our currency is over evaluated against USD. Remind that 10 years ago, For 1 USD, you had 1,20 Euro as now you pay 0,80 Euro with 1 USD. So customer price has not change that much in the US except Porsche applied same price reevaluation here in europe and in the US.
Then if you add 20% VAT on europe sales, you get price twice as it is in the US. You have to consider also that most of the time stuff from US are not charged with custom tax. Then we don't pay local VAT.

The reason of the volume explained by Roger is right. The 928 euro market is really thin...as lot of european customer order their parts from US. It is economically (and ecologically) absurd but it is the way the world goes.

Hi Rockatansky, I am based in Belgium and have had good experience with these 2 French suppliers:
http://www.rosepassion.fr
http://www.jeanbuser.com
They are better priced than the Germans and much more customer focussed.
Regretfully Belgian customs are a real pita for imports from the US, don't ask me how I know...
By the way what is your first name?

Yeah, VAT will kill you on just about everything over there.

You really can't go wrong dealing with any of the existing, long-lived, 928 vendors (most, if not all, sponsor in this forum)... to anywhere in the world. They've been doing it for years. Time and distance have shrunk dramatically in the last 10 years, buy from the folks that know this stuff and take advantage of that. You'll get the right part, at the right price, and they all stand behind what they send you.

I always compare price from Porsche and "other" dealers. for common parts, there is no evidence of better price with the "others" and then I get parts from Porsche directly.

No I ordered by phone at my local Porsche dealer (which is 150 miles from here!) I used to work with him for 10 years. I call him, ask for the price, compare and usually I order. He takes my credit card number and I receive my parts in 2 or 3 days. It is really a matter of confidence but it works.
He usually tell me about the new parts number in replacement of the old one etc....then I have never been disappointed by that customer relationship.

hi, i am from belgium,
i ordered in the us,
never use usps as shipping,
only iff u can get a lower invoice.
a lower invoice than the real one can help u out, just comunicate with the store where you buy and get a lower invoice ,,otherwise there is the possibility that your country will charge huge taxes and your package will be kept in the foreign customs offices for long time.
especialy if u use usps.
iff u use ups , the shippingcharges will be higher, but they have there own foreign customs personell, so u will not have suprises after your first payment.

iff u ask a lower invoice, be sure to know the amount, the foreign customs are contacting both, seller and buyer , and compare!!

Thanks a lot everybody . Really good hints here to have in mind. I'm sure this post will help many people, mostly for new buyers and of course if they are from Europe.

I gave up on buying from Europe long time ago. Simply because usual order we need among few locals at any given time is at least $500-$1k and there are always at least few parts which are 2-3x more expensive everywhere in Europe than in US. All it takes is one $100 in US part to cost $200 in here and total order is cheaper to get from US despite all the troubles with customs. Usually delivery time is at least same and sometimes even significantly less from US also. For us there's really no point even trying to get anything locally even though some individual items purchased separately might be slightly cheaper. For example oil filter from local Porsche dealer on its own is maybe $5 cheaper than buying it individually from US but 5 of them in one order makes them clearly cheaper to get from US.
