Greg thanks i was wondering about the solution for the M5 that you fixed, sorry for not being more specific.
RFJ if I ask a question about a post its usually for the benefit of a less experienced owner or lurker, they may find a post and not have a solid grasp of the info provided

Greg's post made sense to me, then again I've seen a 5-series with the same problem so my mind was probably filling in the blanks.
As far as the topic goes, I do hate it when my dipstick pops out unexpectedly.......

all the hoses looked good, the two oil separators looked and sounded good, perfect in fact, yet the new parts fixed it.
We had the old parts off twice before.
