Default Leeroy Update, 12/5/2010

So Leeroy is still with me here in SoCal. My wife calls him Humphrey as she is english, and the color reminds her of an old smoking jacket... But that's neither here nor there.

Recently, I took it down for some additional maintenance that was required as well as a repaint of the bumper. Someone had hit it, and the paint was cracking off. A total repaint of the bumper was in order - reprimer and sand, and color - real damage to the rubber itself. The lights were cracked as well, so I replaced them, and I had another bumper shock, so I threw that in as well.

Looks good as new now. Well, good as a 30 year old car can look, really.

The front wheel bearings were concerning me, so I took the hubs out. Luckily I did, as the driver's side had chrome dust in the grease from the bearing faces coming apart. It may be the 18 inch wheels, or the rough roads of San Diego that did it, but the job is done with new bearings and grease. A fellow rennlister sent some much needed rotors for this year, and I bought some nie new brake pads.

The torque tube is an ongoing issue. Since I have used this car basically 24/7 recently for all I have been doing, and now will need it to be even MORE reliable for my new job I started this last week - I just couldn't have it down for a proper TT R/R. What I did was put the bolt back in for holding the front bearing in position which had fallen out and started to cause MAJOR vibrations from the front bearing basically being on the front TT coupler. So whomever gets the car next should seriously think about a TT redo. I think it would make things alot more smooth. That and motor mounts.

Oil leaks on a 2V can be non-existent, small, or very large. The oil seals on this car are 50/50. The passenger side is great. The driver's side is starting to be a real problem. Basically its the front and rear of the driver's cam box. Leaking on the headers and all down that side of the engine bay. I will not be going in there for these seals as I will need the car 24/7 basically until I get another car and pass this character on.

On Sunday of last week, I was driving home in the dark and it seemed to get VERY dark all of a sudden. Leeroy's alternator, which I had had rebuilt less than 1 year ago decided to turn the lights into a sort of soft disco affair, blinking and running up and own in intensity. I ordered a used on from 928intl, but it tested bad as well and I will send it back and just get a Delco unit as it seems a tested part now on these early cars - and hopefully this will be a good decision for the next "owner". Hopefully.

Tie rods are getting loose. They would be fine for 98% of the population, but I can feel them.

That's it for right now. Its December now, and it will be a year for me just after Christmas. I have enjoyed Leeroy, and I do think its time for him to pass on to another grateful owner like me.

After a couple more years and owners I think Leroy might be a good "test case" for what sticks when catching up on PM.

Mark Anderson is the head of that "committee" of like minds. I'd contact him asap.

Working well here. Alternator + Pigtail + 3x 5/16 washers + 8mm(?) metric bolt + shorter belt (4pk0830 goodyear - but different for the pre 82s) + self-fusing silicone tape for the wires.
Filed a notch in the tensioner arm and she went right together. Hardest part was lining up the washers as I put the alternator on.

Its together. Just missing an alternator.

Sometimes it doesn't feel like improving so much as slowing down an immovable force.

Do you still have your 928 project stuff or did you make kind of a clean break from it?

Would the committee consider sending it North of the border? I know a candidate (not me) that could be ideal for it and knows the 16v 928 quiet well.

Got it and the alternator at Advance Auto. Their prices aren't the best standard, but with coupons it worked out quite well.

Keeps a good set of coupon codes available for reference. BIG40 is probably the one you want if you get both items there. Free shipping too.

If you've got the ribbed belt this alternator fits right in. I think you might want to look for a belt just a hair longer than the one I used as it was very tight getting on initially.

Nothing really stopping any regional group from doing a Leroy type project. The "buy in" isn't that substantial compared to a year of PM.

Sorry Bendan, I was OOP when you made this post. I started a new thread "Whatever happened to Leeroy?" which I will close.

I saw Tim and Rose's very nice same color OB at Third Coast. Got me thinking about Leeroy. Sounds like you've been taking good care of him. Mike, are you offering to host a wrench party to update some of Leeroy's maintenance? If yes, I need to be in SoCal for work in the next few weeks. I'd be in to help out if others were interested.

This is such a cool thing, really.

Through the holidays, Leeroy has gotten a new alternator. The rebuilt alternator from Pacific auto electric only lasted, what, about 10 months. That was WITH the cover on it. The new alternator is a chevy AC Delco, properly wired with a new belt. Holding its own, but still not perfect with all accessories and lights on at idle. But the lights are brighter.

Leeroy will have to have new carpets - I may do it or the next owner may wish to as they are damp and smelly now from the rain we had. There was so much rain that the occasional leak from the top of the windshield allowed some in.

I need a solution for the front wheel well liners in front of the wheels. They are trashed as I think the rain created pressure or something and banged them off the screws, or further cracked where the screws were -so they sat on the turning wheels for my trip to North LA. I never heard the plastic on rubber noise at 104mph.
