199OS4-153,000 Miles- what is the difference between Victor Reinz complete gasket set and Porsche complete gasket set- Porsche wanted around 600+ and Victor for 325.00. Need suggestions so i could start buying parts for a rebuild-Everything was replaced from top to bottom within 1-2 years ago- example intake refresh with new 4 pintle injectors-to all the parts under the intake. Bottom new rod bearings,gasket oil,LH rebuild,Maf rebuild,cam gears,Porkentensioner,Isv,knock sensor,crank sensor,etc..ignition modules,coils,caps,rotors...

Unless your compression numbers are suspect (low...) I'd be tempted to leave well enough alone. A peel at rod bearings and thrust bearings with pan off for MM/pan gasket. You do all the services on the car regularly. What's git you nervous?

I used the victor kit, too. I'd suspect Glen is right, but don't know for sure.

I checked high and low because as a north american Hot Rodder Victor is low quality in my books.

To my dismay and just like all the venders tried to tell me, Victor is all that there is.

SO, find which vender has the cheepest engine gasket kit and go from there.

I think there may be different size kits but I am not even sure of that.

BTW I bought the most expencive one and then added custom head gaskets.
Can never have enough spare parts, right.

yeah that was me. your car looked really good and seeing you took me by surprise. first one i had seen in San Diego. with the exception of a few on this forum i wouldn't let anyone touch my car. so yeah i did it myself

Why a rebuild at only 153 K miles?

These engines are just getting broken in at that stage.

if you are experiencing excess oil consumption i'd recommend you install a 928 specialists oil vapor capture and return system.

Speaking of which...whats cheaper replacing the old and tired 928 or rebuilding the engine? At what point/millage would one say..."This car has too many miles on the dial, time to think about a rebuild"

Mileage is less important than actual metrics of engine wear, like compression, leak down, and oil consumption.

Replacing an old and tired 928 with what? Another old and tired 928? They're all old and tired. Too many variables in how people define a rebuild to put a price tag on it. The last 928 engine I rebuilt cost more than the car it went into.

So let me pose the question this way then....at what mileage would you pass on a 928 due to the number of miles on the car?

I know this sounds like ducking the question, but again there are too many variables of year, tranny, color, cosmetics, maintenance record, that factor in before mileage. For the same price, I'd take a car with 250K miles on it that had good paint and a nice interior before I'd take the same year car with 80K miles in need of a repaint and a whole new interior. Mechanicals are easier and cheaper than the cosmetics, IMO.

Seems like all the Victor stuff made in Germany is high quality, not like the chevy stuff from what I have seen in the past.
