I've ordered new cam gears, but I've got to wonder whether, given the current scarcity of the gears, I'm being too conservative.

My old gears are worn less than 10 thousandths of an inch, and the teeth are evenly worn all around. The surface area over which the belt contacts the gear is larger than just the tops of the teeth. Surely this system can tolerate a lot more than .01" wear (as evidenced by the much more worn gears others have taken off their cars).

What bad effects would those of you who expect bad results expect if the old gears were recoated with something to stop the wear and then used in another build?

If I'm not being too conservative by scrapping the old gears, would it make sense to have the new gears stripped and coated with something (nickel?) more durable than the OE coating?

Default Is this your first set?

I'll do a TBW pump in January and perhaps will replace cam gears as well (i'll be at 140K by than) I have two of them on waiting for me to pick up from Roger. I'm sure replacement gears will become available soon also from what I have seen from AO he is pleased with the ones he has coated about a year ago and is still running with them in his car without any problems.

If you've got new gears coming, put 'em on the car, and when they wear out in 21 years, get both sets coated with whatever hot-diggity plasma-powder spray coating is available for such applications in 2031.

With that little wear, I'd say they are excellent candidates for recoating.

I'm hoping the ones on my newest acquisition aren't too badly worn - the ones that came of my '89 aren't fit for recoating.

So is there a shortage of gears or will there be enough to go around for who ever needs them.
