Default Cam and Oil Pump Gears: Replace, Recoat, Reuse?

These are off my '89 GT with <55k miles. What do you think?:

If your answer is "recoat," with what sort of coating?

Thanks,
Mark

I would not reuse them, too much wear for re coating.

If the pics are accurate I've replaced better looking and the crank gear.

With a Gates belt, Porkensioner and the built proof water pump your good for many many years. (may want to check the seals also)

Those are way past worn out, you can not coat them, they are no longer round, take my word on this.

the oil pump gear looks like its aluminum the new updated part is steel.
The cam gears need to be swapped out and the crank drive gear is also probably worn.
Note the 1mm spacer behind the oil pump gear is removed if you fit the steel gear

They wear more on one side than the other, that is why when they start to get through the hard anodizing you can have half a gear that for the most part looks ok and turn it 180 and you can see all of the face of the top of the gears anodizing is gone.

IMHO if you can see any of the anodizing gone it is time for new gears, they wear at a alarming rate once they are down to soft AL.

Oil pump gear is indeed aluminum.

Crank drive gear doesn't appear to be either aluminum or worn.

Are the gears Magnesium or Aluminum?
I thought they were Magnesium.

I think you could get away with recoating. It would be worth a try at the least - since they are NLA for now.

As for the makeup... there must be some magnesium (not sure if you can have an alloy) becasue when we were thinking of haveing them re-coated we had some dipped in an acid bath that would have been safe for aluminum, but doesn't play well with Magnesium (so I was told). This was the result.
