I've heard some VERY bad stuff about Optimas, and certain points were brought up to me about them during my last deployment also. I wouldn't bother with one personally. The dry (gel) cell racing type batteries seem to be much better for something that is occasional use.

James, the SBC is completely different from the LSX based engines. They are not one in the same, and have no parts that interchange. Tony is likely to gain even more of a weight savings from a LSX swap over the SBC which saves a bunch on it's own. Are you referring to Patricks's car? That thing is a beast!

I say do a 6 speed manual swap and leave the GTS lump. You will have done something that many 928 die hards have considered but not done.

Rog says the auto trans are more durable and last longer with less problems. The auto trans stays. T

Something like the Odyssey battery seems the way to go, and with an LSx I would look at relocation to the front.

Come on Rob, where's that last digit? She won't kill you (until she sees it that is).

Thanks Jon, you are correct, I was incorrectly substituting SBC for LSx... I don't know enough about them to have known the diff. Yea, you remember Patrick's car of course! INSANE and it WAS and SBC, so if Tony is going to have even MORE HP and LESS weight than that car (though as an OB it was starting out w/ a 300# advantage in weight saving over a GTS) it will be CRAZY FAST!

Okay.....the 1984 928 Estate was probably 3450lbs as a full street car..maybe 3500lbs with a full tank...as a gutted racer BUT still with full bumper assemblies (including heavy shock absorbers), windshield wipers & fan blower it weighs 2794lbs with an empty tank but with other fluids....with 52% on the nose....

Taking nearly 700lbs out of the car REALLY improves performance..... granted its not really a drag racer..but it sure handles well!!!! Thats nearly a 20% improvement in power-weight!!!

Also and Aluminum block LS engine will be around 150lbs lighter than the 928 engine.....Not so much because of the difference in block weight, but the lack of 3 other cams and all the extra valves....

Brian, it makes a BIG difference doesn't it?! I love that about my race car...it is so much nicer to be 2600# dry! If I didn't have handcontrols, the extra work on the door/side impact protection that I need and an auto trans the thing would be EASILY under 2500#...AND it has a ROCKIN' cage in it too!!!

We use Optimas a lot at my current job, and also when I worked at Bosch. I love those batteries. I have them in several of my cars.

the sunroof delete that I did with devek was about 25lbs , and that left in the stock sunroof, but pulled out the stuff that framed it for the most part. with my recent sunroof delete, I skinned the sunroof panel, welded it back in place, and further gutted the roof panel of framing metal. another 10lbs was saved.

overall a real sunroof delete roof replacment would be around 30lbs. my hack job probably weighs about 2-3lbs more than a real sunroof delete roof replacement , or non sunroof car.

FWIW, I'm not seeing where his mods are going to bring anywhere near 268 lbs savings:

Corbeaus website says A4's are 26 lbs each, either in normal or wide. So big savings over the 118lbs that a pair of 12-way and 8 way, heated GTS seats weighs

Between the double DIN brick, amps, subwoofer magnets and all the wood framing etc, no way are you saving weight over stock rear seats and the rear A/C.

A set of 4 GTS Zimmerman drilled rotors weigh 68 lbs 8 oz, dunno what the solid factory units weigh but I doubt it's more than 72 or so.

The rear wiper motor assembly is 3 lbs exactly, and the wiper arm and blade is 14 oz.

GTS spare tire is 27 lbs 4 oz, so that's a real savings. (EDIT: a 16" spare is 29 lbs 7 oz)

Tool panel with a full set of tools = 5lbs 2 oz

Porsche air compressor in its box = 5 lbs 7 oz

I'd love to know what the real weight savings on the sunroof delete is, I have a non-sunroof panel, cross braces, headliner, and sound deadener, will get their weights.

But the only # that really matters is how much less than 3505 the finished car weighs with a 1/2 tank of gas.
