For previous or current Corvette owners.
I am curious to hear your comparison if you had or still have a Corvette, to your 928.
The likes and dislikes.
The years of cars you have or had (Corvette and 928).
The overall cost to own.
Thanks.

Corvette vs 928
I have owned one Corvette (97 C5 from new) and two Porsche 928's (84S and 87S4). The C5 was very refined compared to previous Corvette models I had driven, yet it was still very unsophistacted in it's feel compared to either 928. The interior felt cheap, the car rattled and squeeked even though it was a new car. It accelerated faster and felt faster....seemed to handle more nimbly also...felt lighter compared to the 928. The 928's are more comfortable, feel more sophisticated, substantial, and well put together....the downside is they are more complicated to support and maintain, thus more expensive. The Corvette sounds powerful and loud the 928 smooth.
I sold the Corvette after 2 years I currently drive the 87S4 and do not plan to get sell it, it is the most enjoyable car I have driven. I have owned 2 other Porsche also 2003 911 and 1982 911 and compared to the 928 these cars do not provide the same quality of overall driving experience of the 928.... a fast powerful car that handles well that does not punish you for this performance.

I have an 86.5 928 auto and a 95 Corvette 6 speed (really my wife's)
The Corvette feels a bit quicker than the 928, handles really well, and is fun to drive. I prefer the 928, though.
The 928 with 118k miles feels way more solid compared to the Corvette which only has about 18k on the odometer. The Corvette has so much plastic in it, there are a ton of squeaks and rattles. It just feels cheap compared to the 928. Granted, it cost about half has much when brand new.
At high speed, the 928 feels more stable than the Corvette...and my 928 still has it's original shocks and springs.
I can't compare the costs too well since the Vette hasn't needed any major service yet. The only things that's really gone wrong with it was something with the climate control a few years back. That was like $400 to get fixed.
The 928 has averaged about $1200/year in maintenance over 16 years of ownership. Up until this past spring, I've always paid to have the repairs done by a shop.
They're both cool cars in different ways, but I'd take the 928 if I could only keep one.

I just sold a 1999 Corvette FRC (Fixed Roof Coupe). Think C5 Z06 before the Z06. The car was extremely nimble and fast, got great gas mileage. I didn't have any major costs associated with ownership other than chasing down some front engine accessory squeaks. Nothing major at all. Great fun and served me well for the two and a half years or so I owned it. My wife drives a Cayenne and usually the people we hang out with at PCA events are the 928 folks.
I used to have a '85 928S Auto US car, and now I am buying a '86.5 5-speed of the same type. I never once questioned that choice. Interior fit and finish FAR exceeds the Corvette. It is a bit heavier, but the 928 is SOLID, the Corvette was just plastic and fiberglass. Very stiff for it's size and weight, but you didn't get that reassuring thud when closing the door. Power isn't even a contest really. But that's nothing a good set of chips and some exhaust work can't fix. Add boost, and you can have more than enough power in a 928.
Maintenance might kill you if you don't work on either of these cars yourself (which I do), so it was never an issue for me. There is such a thing as a Corvette tax!

Three Wheelin'
I had a '81, '86 and '91 Vette. Each generation was better in every way. I sold the '91 to get a 928 S4 back in the early 90's. I loved Vette's until I got into Porsche's. The Vette's are great in many ways and serious bang for the buck BUT there is just no comparison to what a Porsche feels like, looks like and is. I feel safer in a 928 than any Vette. I also like having a car you don't see everyday. Can't say that about any modern Vette. Resale on the Vette's "used" to be better than 928's, but not as good as 911's I've owned. 928 resale has always been weak. Don't know what the resale market is like today -- as I'm never selling my current and third 928. I'd say that the Vette's were just less refined in fit, finish. Statistically they were fast, nimble and stopped well. I did always like that large clam shell hood of the 86 and 95'ish MY's. Wish they kept that detail going on into the newer generations.

A pair of 87's the Corvette is better around town and gets far better mileage, the 928 is better on trips.
Apples and pecans though, totally different cars, one is a GT and one is a sports car.

I had a 1999 C5, I did love it, but I have to say, the Porsche is just as much fun, but the wife likes driving in the Porsche more. And... 928 is just a rarer car, which i do appreciate.

Drifting
my wife has a 01 convertible, she loves it and I like it. 928 drives much better, morerefined and smoother acceleration. but the vettes allure is the feeliing of raw power with very nice handling...we like them both for different reason. next on list is the gs...very nice hand built engine with dry sump, wider stance and better fit and finish than the 01 which was acceptable.

I think the C6 Corvettes look great (on the outside) but he rounded shapes of the interior remind one of a 90's Cavalier. Chevy needs to hire some of the Cadillac interior designers to finally move up a notch and be taken seriously by the rest of the world. No one can fault the performance however.

I have an '84 corvette that is very fun to drive (even though only 205 hp when new!) It is first year of c4 version and is also zr1(?) suspension. Corners like a big go cart with almost no body roll. In '85 suspension was softened due to people complaining of ride. For only 205 hp it feels like more, and whoever owned the car before me really liked it as absolutely everything works. Even though I still like the 928 better ('81 and '86.5) as the build quality is far superior. As others have said there is a great deal of plastic and it looks cheap (corvette) however mine has no rattles. I am up in the air of whether to sell it, the 914, or one of the 944's (3) (never the 928's)

Really, liked it, but it was a large car to strap on everyday to drive it.
I treated it like a DD. So I ate thru tires, gas, brakes considering my commute, pretty fast.
Insurance was killin us, with good records.
It was a loud car on the highway..some build quality issues..but powerplant was indestructible.
Traded it for an RX8...and love the 8...beat the living snot out of it, 100mi a day of mountain high speed commute, and insane amounts of Group4 HPDE. Nary a problem at 114k.

I will tell you this much, a 84 with a 150 shot will go, my L98 with 12 PSI goes well also.
