Default WP bolt repaired to 8mm - some questions

At some point in it's life, the 4.7L I'm rebuilding had the lower water pump bolt (the one just above the crank) repaired to an 8mm bolt.
A 8mm timesert was installed. The repair looks good; however, I will have to drill every water pump I install to accomodate the 8mm bolt. I'll post a pic of this repair later tonight.

Maybe I shouldn't be, but I'm kind of leary about this. I did a search, but only found info on repairing the 6mm. I thought I would ask the experts their opinion on this.

My questions;

1) Has anyone seen this repair before and is it reliable?
2) What value should I torque the bolt to (same as 6mm)?
3) How should I seal the gasket as I will have to cut the gasket for the larger bolt, leaving less gasket material to seal against the block.

Thanks for any help,

Tom,you could get an 8mm stud or threaded rod and turn it down on a lathe and thread it to 6mm and leave just enough of the 8mm thread showing to sufficiently screw it into the block flush with the surface of the block or just a hair below the surface,this way you won't have to drill the pumps or the gaskets and you can use same torque values. Time-Serts are very good and I would torque this to the normal value (6 ft-lbs). The PO must have really mooched that hole because Time-sert also makes a 6mm Big-Sert with thicker walls, but the 8mm Time-Sert is larger than that.

I like Ed's idea. Step studs are available. Here is an 8x1.25 to 6x1 mm. Is your Time-Sert 8x1 or 8x1.25?

I think I've even seen them at Ace Hardware.

Ed, I like your idea. I could put one in just below the surface so it's not proud of the block and loctite it to keep it from turning.

Bill, appreciate you pointing me to a made part - I'll check ACE also. I do believe the threads are 1.25mm.

Thanks for the help,

I'm going to keep that stud idea in the back of my head for future reference, I'm sure there are more applications for that type of thinking!!
