From what I understand, the key to good sound is running separates with the correct cross-overs, not so much the brand of the speaker or the size 3.5 or 4". Speakers with build in tweeters and a capacitor is not going to sound as good. A decent subwoofer is critical and the only place for that in a Porsche 928 is the spare tire area unless you want to weight down the car with large heavy boxes in the hatchback area. Also, speakers mounted on the lower foot area is far better than speakers mounted in the upper door because they put the left speaker farther away from your ear to better match the distance of the right speaker for better stereo balance. But Porsche made a mistake in that area. So we are stuck with speakers mounted up above the handle, which puts them right next to your left ear.

FiveElements,
Agreed, the stock locations are not ideal, and I am working on offering a different low frequency option. I do currently have a drop-in subwoofer enclosure that fits in the spare tire area which also has a vibration isolated carrier for either a 5, 4, or single channel amp, you can find it in my signature below as Sharkwoofer.
In regards to the crossovers, I can assure you that they are quite refined. The measurements and design were all done in LEAP and LMS by one of the best crossover designers in the country. I did the board layout personally, with an eye towards using the most copper possible to reduce losses (I can not even solder these boards without pre-heating as there is enough copper to wick all the heat out of the iron). All the components were custom made for this particular crossover, capacitors wound by Clarity in England to my specifications - including upgraded large gauge copper leads. Inductors are air-core custom wound and varnished in Poland by Janzten.
I think that you would be quite pleased with both the fit, finish, and thought that went into this system.
Thanks
Hans

I have an 84, and would like a complete replacement sound system, including shark woofer. I've tried reading through the thread, but geez, there's a lot here. Is there a place where you just list parts, prices etc.
Thanks much, I'd really like to get this in my car!!!

A big thank you to Hans for developing the kit. I was pleased that I met you at Sharktoberfest in 2011.
Installed my set yesterday in the 1990 S4. RHS took about four hours, but I fixed the window alignment while the door card was off. LHS took an hour and a half, with no diversions. Looking froward to breaking it in today.
A week ago I fitted a new Alpine unit CDE 135BT and removed the bluetooth unit with its associated wiring.
My next project is to move the amp that I installed in November. It is a Soundstream Picasso Nano PN4.320D, it should fit into the space where the original amp was and I can tidy up the associated wiring.
Once this is all set up I will look into more bass, I have some Earthquake mini subs mounted in the spots in the B pillar, but one is blown and the setup was a failure as the cones hit the original grille under high power. Reluctant to put a sub in the spare tyre space.

Which Earthquakes were you using? I have been considering their SWS series buy have no experience with this companies sound or quality. Any input is appreciated.

I ran in the door speakers yesterday while I tinkered with the mini subs in the B pillars. The amp has a 80Hz low pass setting which I used on the rear channel. I reconnected the LHS SWS speaker and there was a noticeable improvement in the bass. Out of curiosity I checked the RHS one which I thought was blown, but it was perfectly fine, so i reinstalled it. The total effect is now sensational. To me the sound is warm and full, with no harshness. I can see why the Sharkwoofer is so highly recommended as it would take the sound to an even better level.
In answer to Mike's question on the Earthquake SWS, there are two 6.5's, one mounted in each B pillar. I will start up a separate thread with more detail.
I also moved the Amp into the original spot alongside the passenger seat, a very good fit, with enough clearance.

Thanks Hilton, I think it was you who mentioned that the Soundstream Picasso Nano PN4.320D had the right dimensions to fit in the spot.
I just went into the garage and listened to a Dire Straights track through the new custom front speakers, sounded so wonderful a real credit to Hans for making them available for us to enjoy.

This weekend, I cut a couple speaker adapters, including some to hold the 6" Earthquake subs in the early square grill cars.
Something I always wanted to test, was installing the door speaker kit in the rear location on these 84-88 cars... it works. This adapter allows the use of my door kit in the B-pillar of those cars with the larger square grills. Pricing would be the same as a door kit, as no new grills would be included.
Thanks
