Does not have valve covers. Cam carriers, it has, but I don't know why you would replace them.

Sorry I am new to the 928...if you are facing the car I have a leak on the bottom left cam carrier. Oil is dripping onto the exhaust manifold / header. When you jack the car up and check underneath you can see where the oil is driping from the Cam Carrier.

Is it leaking from the front and running around to the side, then dripping? If so, here is a set of cam seals for the front and one at the rear, that are usually worn out. They can be replaced without removing the cam carriers. The fronts require removing the cam gear. If they have never been changed, I like to change them with the TB/WP job. The rear one can be changed really easy.

There is a gasket between the cam carrier and the head that goes out sometimes. The car has hydraulic lifters so it it needs pressurized oil at the top. The oil feeds are through (roughly 1/4") holes at the front and rear of the gasket. The hole in the gasket is reinforced, but still sometimes goes out. Of course, you have to pull the cam carrier off to replace the gasket. It is just barely possible to do it with the motor in the car, although I will never do it that way again. I think the passenger side is easier than the drivers side.
There are gaskets at the front and rear of the carrier also and I have heard of them being a problem by have not seen it for myself.
If it is the cam carrier gasket you will need:
-The gasket.
-A very long (4 inch or so) allen head socket (7mm, I think, though it might be 8)
-A timing belt tension adjustment tool (use the Kempf tool, cause it is only $50). You might be able to borrow one.
-A good thought would be to replace the timing belt at the same time. If so use Contental or Porsche only.
-I would not go so far as to replace the water pump if yours is not leaking.

Several of us have had the experience of doing this job with the motor in the car only to have the gasket fail again after 1000 miles or so. So think about using a sealent, carefully torquing the fastners and checking the mating surfaces carefully.

What they are saying is it is a rather involved repair. You will be removing the carriers AND the camshafts which means you must take off the timing belt .....Also the allen head bolts which are inside the cam housings (under the small alloy plugs) are easy to strip out so much caution and several different length allen tools are needed or it can get real ugly real quickly.

Looks like you might be in luck. The rear cover on the cam carrier is just held on with three bolts and the gasket is probably just a few dollars. I would think it would be worth a try to just replace the small gasket. Part number should be 928.105.189.02. Call Roger at 928sRus or Tom at 928 international. They will have it in stock at a better price than the dealer and can mail it right to you. I would think you would be looking at an hour or so to replace it depending on how hard it is to work around the air injection line that runs behind it.

Well got the job done..I replaced both rear Cam Carrier Seals...I just hope I didnt under tighten them or over tighten them...oh well when they start leaking again..Now I know how to tackel this job. Its the front ones that likely need work too...but I will until I need to replace the TB & WP....

Good plan. Working these cars is all bout taking advantage of windows of opportunity. If you don't know any history of TB/WP changes I would pull the upper cam covers off and inspect the cam gears and cam seals as well before ordering the TB/WP parts.
