You have NO chance in an exceleration contest . his car will no stop / corner / top speed . Tell him you will race him on a road course , then stay away from his car on the track , 1-2 laps and it will be over .

If he is making 450 at the crank then that 150 shot may not be enough, Torque is what moves cars and a BB has tons of that.

One of my early combo's with ported stock oval heads only made 417 at the crank, but made 537 FT/LBS at a very low RPM, 2700 IIRC.

Drag racing is about traction, and even with equal power a 928 is lousy at putting power to the pavement compared to any half way decent straight line car.

Very true.

I can slam the gas on my '88 and the car doesn't go anywhere. Well, one wheel spins up pretty good, and it looks like I am doing a brake stand. So, cool factor is good.

Now that I think about it, I win more races leaving a parking lot, when most people see that, they don't wanna race.

You are about to be truly embarrassed. Why even contemplate such nonsense?

Just for the heck of it. It will be fun nonetheless. As for his top speed, my friend is the one who came up with that # based on whatever setup he has. He could be wrong though. I understand what everyone is saying about staying away from the Chevelle when it is moving, and that's what I plan on doing. As far as 0-60-0, will I be able to beat him even if he does reach 60 a good amount of time before me?

Yes, you may be able to beat his 0-60-0 times.

As far as the top speed, that really is limited by how tight he is able to turn it, I had a 7500 RPM chip in mine, your bud may only be able to go 4500 or so.

Anything you can do to make it about anything other than just straight line acceleration will be in your favor.

That is a nice car! No idea how high my friend's motor will rev.

Just hope he keeps it straight and doesn't end-up taking you out sideways somehow.

I'd just call it a draw and make a dyno day out of all the talk

This is going to be embarrasing. You are putting less than half the Chevelle's hp to the ground.....he'll be bus lenghts, not car lenghts, but bus lenghts ahead of you. You are so much slower that I'm willing to bet he'll take you on a 0-100-0 race too.

If he is indeed putting it to the ground, that is one of the problems of a big torque car like a Chevelle, all you have to do is get a little aggressive with the throttle and it goes up in smoke.

He is right and wrong as you have a slow Porsche.
Most likely the Porsche is faster as top speed so your car is faster but its not quicker, as in acceleration.
Depends on what you look at as in slow, top speed or acceleration.
You don't have to race at all, already know hes quicker in accelration and
on top speed already know it will only do 130mph if running a 28inch tall tire so no need to race.
28*6500rpm/340*4.10=130mph

If you do race him, please do it in a safe place.
Our local Drag Strip has Wednesday nite fun drags most of the year, perhaps you have a strip near you.
You will get timing slips with reaction times etc.

My guess is that 396 is over 450 hp unless it's real
mild. They had 425 hp versions in '66 in Corvettes. Unless he goes up in smoke, you are done.
The Big Block Chevrolet engine is a torque monster.

Have fun!

My Pantera will blow the doors off my S4, and the Cat has a BB Chevy. Real tall gears in the ZF too, but I got the HP to pull those gears.
If I were you, I wouldn't race the Chevy. The Chevy is very cheap to fix, with regard to the Porsche! This isn't even a fair comparison. The Chevy is built to run fast in a short distance, the 928 is a high speed cruiser. Apples & Oranges.
It's your car, do as you please.

One of the guys I play soccer with has exactly that car except it's a convertible. Not sure exactly what motor he has in there, but I remember him saying it was newly rebuilt. I leave him in the dust within 5 seconds no problem (I am talking bus lengths). It is really good at spinning the tires though
