I'm going to go with a water pump impeller shaft/bearing issue with a side order of bent shoulder bolt.

If the shaft had seized I'm sure it would have heated up the belt enough to skip or melt or more likely break, but if it was turning, why the overheat?

Glad it's a non-interference and I'm hoping that you got it shut down before the overheat condition caused any additional problems.

Please keep us posted.

For the PS hose, I don't think it's required to disconnect that in any MY. Should be able to disassemble the bracket and move it out of the way.
I dug in a little more last night. I'm not seeing any damage as in bent bolts. Belt, cam gears, oil pump gear, and crank gear all look good. Tensioner has oil in it, but not sure how much yet. PO said belt was retensioned after 1000 miles. (about 15000 miles ago) I don't believe this is true. TB has a greasy feel that smells like coolant. I think I'm dealing with a loose TB that then got a leaky WP that allowed the belt to slip on the WP.... That would explain overheat, and pressure alarm... Will report with more as I get through it. I'm definitely going to install a Porkensioner...It's the only way to go I think...

check your belt to cam timing marks you might have the cam or cams out by one tooth i did this by mistake when replacing the belt on my 79 and it ran very hot and i barely noticed the power loss might be an easy cheap fix

Will do. Thanks for the tip! I suppose it could have skipped a tooth with how loose the belt is. Seriously, it's so loose it's scary! If this were an interference motor, I'd really be happy to have caught it like this. I can move the belt up and down much more than an inch!

Happy New Year everyone. Since the holidays are finally over, I got into the shark today. Got the TB covers off completely. Water pump wouldn't turn with the engine. Turned the WP pully with my hands a bit. It was firm to turn, but didn't seem like it was scraping at all. Also there are no signs of pully migration, as the belt is still simi-centered on the cam pullys, and I see no damage to the belt anywhere. I am seeing some water leak from the bearing when the WP pully turns. It looks likr timing is off one tooth, but I want to get a second opinion from everyone. I was thinking that maybe the timing was off due to belt stretch, but it seems like it's off exactly one tooth. So belt stretch or timing off a tooth? What do you think? Should I go for an engine guardian WP on this, or do you think because of the non interference aspect of the '84, should I just save the cash and pick up a plastic impeller Laso? I will post more photos when I get the WP off. Hope the impeller didn't migrate into the block....

Cheers!

Congrats, looks like a sensible reason for your boilover, and a low impact one!

The PO may have installed the belt incorrectly one tooth off if he/she was not careful. New pump and belt should take care of it. The guage being somewhat in the normal range is a mystery as others have said.

It was getting hot but not circulating well around the probe with the locked-up pump.

Probe is high in the system, so was probably not even wet since coolant was depleting.

I suggest to replace the WP,
the pivot bolt ,
and the bushings ,
as well as the rubber cap over the tensioner,
And a new belt

The timing marks look normal, only half a tooth off.
