928 Parts Market Conditions?
Hello, I'm here visiting from the 944 section but hopefully one day I'll be a proper 928 owner. I had a question to ask of you 928 boys: what is the parts market like these days? I have an opportunity to pick up a 1981 928 that I would part out since it has a broken transmission (yes I know I should fix it and drive it but I need the money for my 944 unfortunately plus I'd rather have a low milage 928 instead of this one) so I was wondering how much interest and demand there is for original factory parts off of these cars. Do things like lights assemblies, engines, wheels, interior parts, suspension parts, ECUs, etc fetch a fair price or would I be wasting my time on something like this? I'd actually like to sell the parts on here fairly cheap to help any of you guys out since I've received so much help since I joined the website from everyone. So, is the market up or down for parts these days? I appreciate your help . Thanks in advance!

it all depends..... in general I would say the market is down, just like it is for all "luxury" items....& "want" cars are no different.... I do think the market for older 928 parts is a bit softer than later models too...

Being in California, perhaps check with Mark Anderson @ 928 International to see what he would pay for the car in its condition. If you can get the car for less and sell it to Mark -you may get some profit. Doing it piece-by-piece will take forever and you'd still have the unwanted parts to dispose of.
Just an idea...

If I were to do it I'd strip everything off the car I thought I could sell and then give the frame away for free on craigslist (the CA Bay Area craigslist has tens of thousands of users so no problem disposing of free cars for scrap metal). That way I wouldn't have the car lying around just the parts and at the price I could get the car (hoping to get the price down to ~$800) I figure I could make my money back selling things pretty cheap: Complete longblock $300-$400, Wheels $100, Interior bits $200 total, etc and that's selling things way below what they're really worth so I'd probably be in the profit margin by the end of it.

So you want to take a car we love, murder and dismember it, and sell us the entrails........................
I think in the long run you would be miles ahead, to sell the 944, buy a transmission and a paint job for the 928 and finally have a car you no longer have to just dream of owning.
Yeah, that's the ticket.

Ditto. We can sell you what you need.
Speaking of murdering cars, BTW I complained to the Popular Mechanics folks about their stupid Mythbusters approach.

As I said I don't want this particular 928 due to the milage and also the color and year, and the fact it's an automatic which I don't know how to drive. I apologize for offending 928 owners by wanting to dismantle one I did not intend to do so. Please lock this thread. Again I sincerely apologize.

A couple folks have have tried to get into the used-parts biz in the last couple years and have gone down in flames. 928 International offers clean, tested and warranteed used parts for a fraction of what new ones sell for. The others tried to sell no-warrantee, dirty and untested parts, albeit at a discount from Mark's prices. My thinking is that I want the part's I buy, new or used, to work/look/last better than what they are replacing. Otherwise why replace?
I can tell you that lots of parts on the car you have will be sold for scrap. The engine maight sell OK if it's been tested and demonstrated as good. Unless the interior parts are exceptional, they are almost impossible to sell. Fenders and hood, doors and maybe bumper caps will likely sell off the body if they are real cheap. But it will be a while. You already know that the trans is shot. The wheels are tough to give away, especially if they are the 7" flats in anything less than perfect condition. Suspension is a normal upgrade from not to the pre S stuff on your car. Ditto brakes.
Take a hard look at the car and maybe it's worth putting another trans in it. You'll have much better luck selling a whole good-running car that you'll have parting a single car. Plus it's easier to explain to wife/neighbors/homeowners associations/etc that you are making it driveable rather than scrapping it in the driveway.

Unless the interior is MINT you are wasting your time.
Are you near Sun Valley or Fontana? You can buy a used auto trans for $650,
Call,
Elite Foreign Auto Sun-Valley 818-768-1350
Express Auto Dismantling (Fontana) Trans has 82KM 909-356-5050
Both are asking $650

Nobody here is really all that sensitive about scrapping non running old 928's.
There is no money in parting an early 928. Owners of the early cars are typically cheap, constantly hunting for bargains and only when no other option exists paying a fair price for anything. The early cars are also fairly reliable except for wear parts, which are worn on all the old ones unless recently replaced, so nothing to sell but body panels, which you have to sit on until somebody local needs.
You can also very easily end up paying to have the chassis removed.
I bought an 84 Euro S, I hate to think how long ago, pulled the engine and used it immediately, sold the transmission, hood, hatch, but thats it and it still lives in my garage taking the space of about two cars since its apart mostly.
BTW $650 is WAY too much for an unknown but assumed working early AT, $300 to $400 is common from a private parter.

I do admit that I shop for the best value as my car needs allot of catch up but I am positive that I have never cheated anyone by paying less than they asked or for that matter suggesting they were asking too much! Damn, I paid too much
I was wondering why I got all the looks at 3rd coast and just assumed it was because I ain't the most attractive guy
Should I ever find enough cheap parts to get my car running and get it to an event I will be sure to park at the edge of the event

I'd choose my fleet of rough older S cars over a single concours GT any day. Its just not what I want from a hobby. Saving them is fun. Driving them with no worries about somebody scratching or bumping it is fun. Spreading the parts to others inexpensively is fun. Keep the faith. To those that can or choose to afford better specimens, I support you as well.

Fixed it for ya. Not much better, but a little less likely to get ya lynched by us OB owners at the next GTG.
