Default The Trials of 928 Ownership in the West

Friday afternoon I discovered I had a hole in the bottom radiator hose.

If I ordered it airbagged from Brisbane to Perth (4,357 kms) I could have one for Wednesday!
So with a liberal application of gaffer tape I refilled it (twice) and made it home to Perth.
WA actually stands for Wait Awhile.

A bit of digging around at several parts stores came up with a XC to XF Ford Falcon (1976-88) six cylinder bottom hose, and I cut a bit of aluminium tube for a joiner = all good!

Oh, and of course WYAIT, a few surplus bits came out (I blame Porken):

The hose needs to be ziptied to the fan schroud to keep it away from the P S pulley

The original hose did get eaten by the PS pump, the "hybrid" hose is actually well clear if viewed from the top.

Not sure if the shroud will be going back in, as it runs great with just the pusher electric fan (I've jumpered the A/C switch) and the mechanical fan definately will not be going back in. Might look for a suitable electric fan donor amongst the local vehicles.

Good save. Now what are the two cars just in view of the left over parts?

The pusher ONLY blows air over a small % of the radiator the area it covers. Shrouds cause airflow on all the radiator. If you never stand still you can get away with no fans at all

I have run thousands of miles without timing belt covers on various engines, both on the street & the track without an issue. The belt covers were incomplete when I got it, so I have no intentions of replacing them.

Dan: those are two of my boy's cars, a 1971 Mini Clubman and a 1974 Mini Moke
I'll save those (and more) for another thread...

Oh dude. You are just holding your breath for total disaster. I've seen a VERY bad thing happen to a friends 944 with the TB cover left off. He said almost exactly what you said. Sure, you might go 100000 miles without issue. My friend made it about 5000 miles. Please get yourself some covers... I'd hate to read your post showing the results...
The 2000 Ford Contour dual fan unit will work perfectly for your needs. They are cheap and available at wreckers. Fit nice, and blow alot of air.

Nice Macgyver fix. Good luck!

Warnings on the covers noted thanks guys, and I'll try the Ford (Contour) Mondeo fans. They were an unloved car over here.

Following that, if it came w/o a fender, you'd be running open wheel?

I'm not quite willing to bend our road rules that far, but when I drove it the 60km home after buying it I found the front left wheel arch liners were rubbing.
The PO had refitted them without ANY fixings, so I'm running without them too at the moment, although I do plan to repair & refit them.

Anyway, drove back to the mine site yesterday, fully laden with 2 bikes, toolkit, box of spares, luggage, a stepladder & a set of racing rubber & Mini rims.
Someone on here made the comment about only Aussies & Europeans carting gear with their Porsches?

I haul all kinds of stuff in my 1980.....put a good sized frig in the back just unhooked the hatch struts and lifted the lid much higher. Removed it once and loaded in a Camera Man to shoot part of a video. Headed to the track it hauls 5 "race" wheels and tires, jumper box, tool box , alloy floor jack and two jack stands, small cooler, my luggage, spare parts bin...and me And it has a rollbar as well !

I once hauled a gas powered post hole digger, fuel, about 6 shovels, 10 gallons of water, a passenger, and an ez-up sunshade in the back of my '79. (I did put down a tarp first... Plenty of room to spare. The 928 is one of the most versatile sports cars ever made! It can haul a lot of stuff and still look great doing it.

Think I need to be a bit more cautious when using it as a parts hauler.
The 928 has been on stands since Christmas when the tank started leaking from where it had been patched previously.

Had it repaired by a professional poly welder, he removed the old patch and extrusion welded a new one for only a carton (or case of beer to you Yanks)

Ran well at first, but then started loosing power & stalling. Turning the ignition off & then on agin would allow it to run for 5-10 minutes until the problem reappeared. I ruled out the internal pump, filter, relay & finally ran the pump from a separate power supply and have confirmed the main pump is now defunct. Of course this happened over a weekend again, so no replacement available. Will buy an 044 today.

Oh, and the reason the tank split? When we loaded my rebuilt Mini engine into the back of the Porsche apparently the extra weight made the tank come down onto the leg of my mates engine hoist. Took me ages figuring out where the red paint came from
