Hi Tom (Tom in the Blue Mountains? )
Its Red Tartan dress, code 8AB. Seems tartan was also available in Beige or Green as an interior fabric.
Seems it was available in 1978 on the 911's on the standard list, but was gone from the list in '79.

This kind of fabric might have been in Jim's #6 car before they changed it to brown Pascha. But the car pictured here has a later steering wheel and sunroof, as well as automatic climate control.

I'm not sure it had plaid to begin with, though the pictures you have referred to may indicate something is amiss. Look more closely at those pics and see if you see what I see.
None-the-less, the R&T photos (for June '77 articlle) were taken late february, early march. Those photos, show Pascha.
I propose that no other press got earlier photos than the France press release. It is possible the photos where you see plaid are earlier stock photos. It also possible that the car with plaid may not be Number Six. Though maybe it is. Not enough to make a call at this point.
Back to you regularly scheduled show, already in progress.
I'm diggin' the plaid!!

We have a place up here called "Fleet Farm". They have an entire line of clothing in that exact pattern.
