Default Nice Drive Last Night in the Pac NW

Tom Middleton, John Davis, and I went on a nice drive last night in our 928's.
There was some occassion to it, as we had lost one of our 928 brothers exactly four years ago to a late night (actually early morning) one car fatality accident. There is still some mystery as to why Larry McMullen passed away that night. He was known to all of us as a very laid back guy, not one to drive aggresively on the street, and always drove within his limits. His car left the road beyond the apex of a flat turn. The shoulder is a little lower than the street level where Larry's 928 left the road, and his car hit a tree a couple feet up on the trunk. To this day I'm still a believer that he must have been trying to avoid a deer or some other obstacle on that rural road on Bainbridge Island and just over corrected. We experienced some white out fog last night on our way home that maybe also could have been a factor. Literally lost the road in the thick pea soup at times. Other than the occasional fog bank, the night was crystal clear and the air was cold. I like driving with this mail slot open and the heat cranked full up, and last night was perfect for this. You could see the stars flying by in the overhead canopy while gobbling up the pavement in front of you. With the cold air, the 928s were all runing strong. Police were out in force but the V1's kept us safe and we were able to have a great run.
Upon arrival at the Harbour Pub, we each picked a favorite brew from the massive beer menu (the cream stout was rockin') and toasted to Larry. He loved his kids, he loved to sail, and he loved his 928.
We ended up closing the bar down after slaying two rounds of nachos, staying a half hour later than closing time. Larry had a little surprise for us as we went to leave. He was a big proponent of "black is better" when it comes to 928 colors. When we went to leave, Tom's black '89 GT and my black '88 S4 fired up no problem. John's gold '87 S4 was another story. Cranked but would not fire. After going through the relay swapping exercise with no luck, I had to drive about 10 miles out to find on open gas station and get a set of jumper cables. The gold S4 started up right away, we were off on our return trip home. I'm sure somewhere up there Larry was smiling at it all.

Good friends, good times and good memories, that is what 928's and car clubs are all about! Sorry for the sad occasion but a very touching story for sure! Thanks for sharing...

Yep...it was a great run in memory of Larry...

I love driving the 928 at night...clear skies, and very little traffic (and not many troopers out).... I especially loved pulling up to the toll booth at the Tacoma Narrows Bridge..paying the toll and just hammering it out of there and up the bridge....clear open roads... BWAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

I'm sure Larry would have approved.. ....
