Default 16 valve timing belt replacement process

Looking at the WSM there is a specific order for placing the belt on the different cams and rollers. I have seen some other threads where it appears they did not follow that process.

Any steps I should take or tips that might help me manage single handed?

I have never followed that specifically, but be careful around number 3. The support for the camshaft is far back from the sprocket so that there will be room for the distributor drive. This makes it easy to break that cam.

There is an order and it is consistent on all our engines. Dwaynes write-up is exellent. There is a hard copy manual with pics, might be even better on ebay, I think the producer is John Kelly? He posts here once in a blue moon.

Thumbs up

I just followed that procedure to the T. Right out of the factory manual and it works beautifully. My first timing belt replacement on a 928... not my first t-belt or chains... but that has to have been the easiest most thought out t-belts I've replaced yet.

First time tensioned I missed by one tooth on pulley 5, passenger cam bank...
Second try got it and pulled it through numerous times.

It's perfectly timed, and I bought the belt tension tool as well to check the tension.

Took less than 30 minutes...

However my engine is being built back up and I have no grease or mess to contend with!!

I slip it over the cam gear (#5) last making sure the belt is taught from the crank through the other cam.
