Default I think I'm Selling my 87 S4

I just bought my black on black 87 S4 from Andrew Olson with the entire top end rebuilt including timing belts and PK in August.

I just think that it's too much for me to keep up.

I wanted a cool car for my short trip to the train everyday, but I'm realizing that these cars need constatnt care and I don't think I have the time or skills to do so.

I'm not trying to make a profit. Andew wanted to sell this for over 12 grand and sold it to me as a Rennlist member for 11 grand.

I'll of course do the same.

It has 95,000 miles on it and not a scratch on the body that I can see.

If interested, let me know and I'll send a complete service list that Andrew did as well as additional pictures.

I really love the car, I just think it's too much work for me to keep up.

C'mon Steve!
You just got the car and it was pretty well sorted.. needed a few things, but no deal breakers.
The only kind of constant care I'm aware of, once a 928 is sorted, is washing, waxing, and fluid changes.
What's got you hung up, man?

An honest post. Self assessment is one area where most of us over estimate our abilities, time, resources and ability to focus. At least I am speaking for myself.

I'd just drive it. What's to upkeep? Did you fix the emissions problem?

That's a pretty deep posting man. I drive mine every day 13 miles, 4 times per day. It was as sorted as Andrews and I have only had one problem, an ignition module. so about 25,000 miles in a year, and one issue. Just do your required preventive maint and you'll be fine. If not, GLWTS.

I'd agree with most here. If your car has been maintained and issues corrected. The cost of upkeep would be comparable to any other car....

Honestly Steve, sometimes I feel the same way. I've only had my 928S for a year. The PO did a outstanding job with the mechanics/upkeep and it hasn't given me any real problem since. Even though this is not my DD, I do worry sometimes about something happening, that with my very low wrenching skills, I won't be able to handle. (It doesn't help reading posts here, that scare the hell out of me, with the problems that could arise and the complexity of the fixes.) But, then I think; I'll do what I can, learn what I can and enjoy this car as much as I can until that day comes that I have a major problem. Then I'll deal with it.

Do what you feel you need to do and hopefully everyone here will understand and not put you down for it. But, my advise is to sit back, relax and enjoy your car.

Wow! Shocker!

Don't want to influence Steve's decision one way or another.

I know he's been having some poor idle and cold start issues. We've exchanged some PM's about what could be causing the issues, but so far, I don't know if he's pursued some of my suggestions or not - so it remains a mystery. My first guess is that it's the Temp II sensor, but long-distance diagnosis can be hit-or-miss.

If anyone is interested in the car, I'd be happy to go through the extensive list of things I did for the car. There are some posts I made when I sold Steve the car that outline what had been done to the car. You might want to look at this thread.

These cars are high maintenance, there's no doubt about that. But to be fair most 20 + year old cars are high maintenance and it doesn't help that the majority of us owners want everything operating perfectly. The difference between a 20 Yo Honda and a 20 Yo Porsche is this....if the window stops working in the Honda you don't fix it, you ignore it and just open the door. If the door stops working you use the other side. No one will notice or care because its a beater honda. Now if you're climbing across the seats in a Porsche it looks kinda funny.

My point is that you can't expect perfect in a 20 yo car unless you're willing to put the $$ and time into it. It's part of owning an old car and its part of the fun too.

For those of you who can't perform your own maintenance (like me) I recommend spending the extra up front to buy a really nice example and just maintain it. Expect to spend $1,500 a year on maintenance, some years will be more and others will be less. Either pay up front or pay later, either way you have to pay to play.

Steve,
You may need to be prepared to wait a while to sell this car. It's well worth the money. There is no question about that. I don't remember how long it took Andrew to sell it the first time, but it wasn't overnight. You'll have to wait for a real buyer looking for a fully sorted car. For the most part, the forum is made up of the same people who passed on purchasing it previously. Plus, we're approaching the off season for sports cars. Can you hold off until the spring (maybe enjoy the car a while longer and see if you change your mind)?

As the beginning of this post say's, I THINK I'm selling my car.

I don't have the confidence in it as I should. I can barely make it to work everyday and home every night. I have to put it in neutral so it doesn't stall at traffic lights.

I know it's something very small, but I have been so busy I haven't had a chance to look at it.

The belt tension light come on all the time, I know that is just a loose wire, but when it goes on I say man what a pain.

This morning the big red light came on and said ANTI LOCK BRAKES. I've only had it a month and I can barely drive it to work, the warning lights are coming on and I don't have the time to deal with it.

I love the car, it's in amazing condition. I just don't have the knowledge or time to work on it.

I guess I didn't realize what I was getting into.

I thought, " of course it would need regular maintence", but every thime I sit in the car I'm wondering if I'm going to make it home.

I may change my mind tomorrow. This car is fast and fun.

People come here with their problems. Keep in mind that 99% of the posts here are problem posts, so it's not as bad as you think. I also realize it is different with a DD that may not be performing well.
