I would not buy the complete gasket kit (~$400!!), because as far as I can tell it is no cheaper than buying all the individual gaskets, and there is a lot of stuff in there you may not need.

They came off that way and all the fastners look they are untouched original(NEVER BEEN APART BEFORE). Notice how clean the water jackets are around the cylinder. I have no idea how many miles are on it but the PO said the compression results were all under 100 whatever that means. The condition of this motor is defiinitly a surprise to everyone involved I am sure. Gunar

The head gaskets looked original and clean with no evidence of leaks, pitting or corrosion. That is how the heads looked when they came off.

Took the oil pan off tonight and everything looks solid underneath. No visible bent rods or crankshaft rub marks. I'm thinking at this point I'll re-ring the pistons, check the rod bearings and have the M28/12 heads rebuilt since the M28/11 heads may have a broken valve spring and it appears that that motor has more miles on it. I think rings are only about $35 which isn't the issue.
Just for the record, where can we get 928 rings for $35? Seriously, that would be good info...

I think you should leave the pistons and rings alone just do the heads and new head gaskets, throw in a set or rod and main bearings if needed, put it back together

I've been waiting for your advice. I like the softer, more gentle way. Especially when the engine looks so good. Gunar

What is the best way to determine if the rings are gone or OK? You should measure the gap but how?

since the engine is designed to run for a very long time whit the parts it came with the rings and pistons were hand built if the cylinders look good IE no major scratches I think that the benefit of trying to reseat new rings is not worth the time.
A fresh set of heads and head gaskets will make the engine run for a long time, dont let it overheat and keep fresh oil in it

Merlin, any suggestion on how to clean the inside of the block before reassembly?

I still wonder about the "low compression" ...... but maybe they were simply wrong or the cam timing was way off ?? Odds are the main and rod bearings are just FINE.

clean off the outside then the inside wont get dirty otherwise some simple green seems to work pretty well just need to rinse it off with lots of water otherwise spray the inside of the engine down with brake cleaner and and put it back together
