Unhappy drivetrain abuse

Hi , could use some help with some sugestions on what might be damaged on my car . Its a low miles 91GT . I took the car in for its annual emisions test today . The car is put on rollers and driven at speed to simulate a road test . The tester started in REVERSE ! got up to speed then shifted to first gear !! Big crunch and the car jumped sideways into a steel block, hitting the tire / rim . I watched this from inside a viewing room . The dash was flashing RED psd ect. And so was I . I drove the car home , it seemed ok , but I am wondering what hidden damage was done . Thanks Terry

Yowch! What a horrible story. Almost lost my bedtime snack. Sorry, I'm not tech savvy enough to know what the damage might be but it can't be good. You have my sympathies, and whatever the damage send the bill to the emisions place.

I would tell the emissions testing place they are going to pay for a transmission removal and inspection, also a full diagnostic check of the PSD system and differential at the local Porsche dealer should be in that bill as well.

drain the transmission oil se if there are any metal chunks use a magnet in the drain hole open the fill hole first , if you cant fill it then dont drain it

You DID get some form of statement from the shop, before you left first..right? Witnesses?

Might read up on how to file in small claims court in your state if not.

Youch, I would immediately stop driving it and do as Mrmerlin says, drain the tranny oil and check for debris.

The last thing I do when I get out of the car at the inspection station is tell the guy to check the shifter for the shift pattern and 1st is DOWN. Then I stand there for a minute and look confused, maybe talk about a sports game or the weather. Before I leave I say again, 'Did I mention the shift pattern is on the handle and 1st gear is DOWN?'.

Then I look like the idiot but I know he'll remember to look at the shift pattern.

Then I stand outside the little observation room and let them see me watching them closely. So far so good with that part of it.

Man I can't imagine standing there watching that.

I hope it works out ok. The transmissions are pretty tough but you've got to be a real hamfisted dolt to force it into gear when the wheels are rolling backward.

Also, with the reverse lockout spring he probably went from reverse to 3rd, no? Otherwise (at least in my car) he'd have to go all the way over across neutral and then back over and down to 1st? Either way I'd get a reputable shop to drain and check it rather than you. If you do it it's your word against the inspection station. Was this a government thing or a private shop?

Good luck and report the results.

I would be PISSED, that's equal to running the car down in reverse and then slamming it in first.......What a StrekStrekStrekStreking idiot.

Wow! Unbelievable.

If I ever find myself in that situation, I make sure to put a note on the shifter to tell the driver, First is down.

Still... the tester showed complete incompetance by not looking at the shift patter. I would request the testing station pay for an inspection of the transmission and all associated components thereof. ANY DAMAGE SHOULD BE COMPENSATED!

Good luck.

Time to be a real PIA to the state.

Enough people complained and filed claims for similar situations that Wisconsin stopped doing the rolling road. Now it's a 100% ODBII test for 96+ cars only.

Don't do any work yourself! Go back to the shop and tell them you want any and all damage covered and that you'll be bringing it to someone familiar with Porsche's to have it looked at. If they give you a fuss, get a lawyer/court system involved.

There's no need for this kind of incompetence. Dumb bastard just lost his job. Lucky for him it wasn't myself, or he'd be loosing more than that.

Thanks for the sugestions , Yes , I got the manager of the inspection station , informed him of what his tester did . His attitude was it will buff out . I had to leave the office for a couple of minutes for his safety. Then filled out a report form . My wifes reaction was get Porshe to install a new transaxle and we will get our Lawyers to sue their *** .

Reminds me a little of the time the tech (or goon in this case) doing a dyno run for me forgot to release the parking brake after centering the car on the rollers.

Good thing I noticed the dash light and yelled at him to stop before he started the first pull.

It isn't - if you did that you are changing the direction of 3500lbs of car. In this case, there was "only" the energy of the wheels, driveshafts, differential, gearbox components, and the rollers on the rolling road. Probably more like 500lbs.

The first worry would be how it is shifting now. You could potentially damage the synchromesh cones or part of the shifter mechanism. The gearbox itself is immensely strong for obvious reasons.

Does it shift smoothly between all the gears?
