Default DR Swaybars going in Next week

Getting pretty excited about the bars being installed next Friday!!

I haven't heard anyone talking about the installs lately, so thought I'd send a shot across the bow.

Jeanie sent everything out to me several weeks ago and I plan on installing w Sean next Friday. I know I'm not the first one to get this round of DR bars, so thought I'd send a shout out.

If anyone has installed in the last several weeks, post up and give me your thoughts on install if you would. I'd like to know if there are any tips/timesavers, anything to make the job easier. I've already picked Jeanie's brain, but it's good to get the general public's input as well.

How are the bars on the cars??? I have one of the original ones from 5 or 6 years back on the 79 and I'm pretty happy w it, but I'm seeking a little input on the newer version.

Appreciate it!!

Chuck

I installed mine several years ago, and the front was very easy to do. The rear was somewhat of a pain because of the transmission being in the way. Did you get the install instructions from their web page? If so, it should walk you right through it. The brackets for the rear bar can be a pain to pry open to get the old one out and the new one in but very doable. I still have the install instructions for the rear in PDF format if you need them.

Do you know what is different between the "old" and "new" versions?

Cheers!

Chuck,
Fitted mine last week - make sure you check the hardware as a lot was missing. You can buy the hardware locally or get back to DR. Check out what you have and don't have before you start.
Need to do some final tweaking but the right rear seems to be touching the gas tank/hose.
Front is hitting the inside of the wheel on both sides on full lock.
I will get it up on the lift and try and figure out what is going on - the bar hitting the wheel is pretty scary and I seem to remember that the bar against the fuel tank was an issue with the last set. We had to chop off the last part of the bar.
Probably something that we have done but been away and not had time to sort it out – sorry.

Drive wise they are awesome – car is very flat – I also added a set of Bilstein’s so she feels like a go-cart.

I got one of the very first sets DR produced and everything on the front fit perfectly. I also have the exact same wheels on the front and rear as Roger, same manufacturer, same width, same offsets and the same tires. My front wheels have never contacted the sway bar at full lock. The rear bar did contact the insulation on a fuel line in the RH rear wheel well. Minor trimming of the corner of the bar, as suggested by DR fixed the problem on the rear.

My point is something is different on the front bar or it's installed incorrectly. Will both RH and LH wheels contact the sway bar when going to full lock? If so then I would guess the sway bar is different. If only one side contacts, can the bar be shifted to the other side to provide more clearance? Roger or Chuck, can you measure the distance from the outside of the bar at the very tips? I'll get mine on ramps tomorrow and measure the same distance. if yours is wider then the bar is bent wrong. If so, I'm sure DR will make it right.

I'm also disappointed to hear the rear bar problem was not fixed but it was pretty minor.

Jeanie mentioned that the bars are slightly different?? (Think she was referring to the bends when I talked w her if I remember correctly)

Anyway, I'm just looking for anyone that has installed in the last few weeks, not several years back.
I already have the original DR Bar on the front of the 79 along w rear drop links (Louie) on the rear.
Really happy w that setup, it is first rate!!

With Jeanie letting me know there is a slight dirrerence in new bars, I'm looking for anyone that has installed so far. (The NEW ONES)

I only have one day carved out for the install so if there is someone out there that says, "On the swaybars, if you do X, X, and X it will save you time, trouble, etc. That's what I'm looking for.

Appreciate the feedback!!

Chuck,
Try reading the posts again - mine were installed last week - is that current enough for you?

Just a data point, I have DR's swaybars from the previous run, and had zero fittment issues. No rubbing, no bumping, nothing, zip, zero nada.

That said, I did see a local guy with his 86.5 who had just installed the new batch. The front looked fine. The rear, however, did bump on the cover where the vent line for the gas tank runs. I beleive he ground it down a bit. I thought maybe it was just his car, but apparently Addco may be off just a touch on this batch.

I do not think the rear is an issue and just like the last batch I am sure they can be ground down and clearance achieved.
The front is more of a concern though. Jim Mayzurk and I have identical setups at the front. Same car and identical wheels. Jim has the original batch and I have the new set.
I will have the car up on a lift later today and see if I can figure out why the bar is hitting the wheel so badly.
In theory this should not happen if they are dimensionally the same as the stock bar.
Probably something that we have done on the install so checking will tell me something.

What size wheels are you and Jim running?

I'm running the Carrera III 8x18 ET 57.

I installed mine several years ago on my '91 GT.

I have Cup ll replica wheels (17") with 225 front and 255 width in the back. The bars work well with no issues. Good luck with the install!

I have the first batch, and, like Andrew, had no fitment issues, front or rears. I've got some 7.5 et52's on the front, set at the middle bolt holes.

The question here from Chuck is regarding the new set of sway bars not the original set.
As already said we have plenty of the old sets fitted without issues apart from the rubbing on the rear which DR took care of.

This is about the new sway bars.
One user reported that he was missing some of the hardware. I was missing the hardware but no big deal. Easy to get locally.

Anyone else have experiance of fitting the new set?
