Last August coming back from the Monterey Histarics or the Reunion is it's now called, 4 of us with 928's from the Nor Cal group were coming out from dinner in Seaside when a group of people were walking in. One guy was in total shock that he had just seen not one but 4, 928's parked together. He almost walked into the wall as he could not stop staring at the cars.

I think there is status from the 928. It isn't the same status as the average owner of any of the nice expensive newer cars.

That status is "My owner is a car guy". (or gal

Thats true. When people see me passing in my 928 they love the car and me as well. When I drive my fathers speed yellow 987s they like the car and hate me... The 928 with its timeless design and deep V8 sound is a character guy

Had a guy ask today if mine was new.

i almost told him half of it, or at least that is the way it seems at times.

I get a lot of looks with both cars. Most people can't believe the age of either one. I do drive the 928 more than the Pantera.
do you have a picture of them both posted

I'm from a small Scandinavian country and unfortunately we don't have many Sharks for sale, and the car tax is incredible, even when you import the car from another EU country. If you buy a good one for $15K € from Germany (that's what the good ones cost there... yeah that's over $20K USD), you have to pay $3-$5K extra for taxes (depending on the mileage) and other expenses.
You must be either from Finland or Denmark? If you are from Finland, there are few good 928s' for sale as we speak in local market, around 10 K €. Last year Swedish Krone was very cheap and I got my -84 S from there less than 5000 €, Sweden seems to be still the best source of good condition low cost 28's at the moment.

928 is outstanding car, build and engineering quality is on its own level and they are under valuated at the moment. Then Porsche will launch their v8 GT like 2 door Panamera, 928 will be more valuated in wide audience.

Very Nice, I checked your profile and saw it right after I posted, some times I forget to do that first.

Thanks for the pic, I would be proud to have a car like that. Is it expensive to look after, or to purchase for that matter. guess I can goggle it.

When I bought the car new it sold for 10 grand. Today it's worth around 65 to 70 thousand. I've had 4 engines in it and it's got a blown big block in it and a new RBT 6 speed transaxel. The car was designed by an American, built by an Italian, with a German ZF transaxel. Italian design with a Ford Cleveland 351. The Pantera was fast in it's day and still is damn fast today. Mine is rated at 750 rear wheel hp. It's a clone of the Pantera GT5 S. Here in Vegas the Lambos, and Ferrari's don't want any part of the Cat.
The transaxel is the most expensive part on the car. It's really not that expensive to maintain. Panteras are prone to rust. Mine was stripped to bare metal and dipped in zink, then repainted. It was Red when it came from the factory. No Panteras were ever painted black new. Only 7000 units were produced from 1971 to 1995, Ford stopped importing them after 74.
I think it's the most badass car ever built. Half exotic, half muscle car.

Same here. People are always asking me to raise and lower the headlamps, then they go "That's so awesome".

I get wild looks all the time, too, and sometimes people want to talk cars.

My favorite response so far was while sitting at a redlight beside a car of young men, one goes "What the ***** is that!? Is that the new Porsche!??"

The day after my post in this thread, a lady and her husband approached me as I was getting into my car at my hotel in Bar Harbor. They told me they were Porsche people, too. They saw the car the night before and wanted to say hi. Turns out they own a GT3 that they use exclusively on the track and both are DE instructors.

Yesterday, I was stopped for gas on the Berlin Turnpike in CT. A guy pulled up next to me and told me his brother in law has a car that looks just like mine (white), except his brother in law's has a blue interior. He said his brother in law purchased the car about a year ago and fixed it up a bit. I told the guy to tell his brother in law about Rennlist.

I get more walk-ups at gas stations and restuarants asking me about the car. I get people letting me in line on the road where with my Tahoe they would give me the finger if I needed to get in line.
I can't tell you how many dirty looks though I get when I drop my kid off at his school and the tree hugging, socialist soccer mom who is more concerned about her carbon foot print than her kid stares at me like I just dropped off her daughter from a drunken night out. That's OK, because I always catch my 9 year old looking back and waving and telling his friends as they walk up that, that's my dad over there in his cool car. I'm brain washing him into the car guy club...!

P.S. Polecat. Sweet. Simply sweet.

Joe, I love Panteras.
Back in '00 I was seriously looking at a beautiful '71. What a timeless, sexy design.
The enticingly inexpensive powerplant was offset by the precious transmission. Unfortunately the steel body was a deal breaker for me because I was looking for something reasonably reliable in which I could take long jaunts in comfort w/out worrying about crappy weather.
But I wanted something unique, fun to drive with character. Something in which the novelty wouldn't wear off.
I wasn't aware of anything like this that had character like the Pantera does.
One day I saw what I thought was a Pantera, early Maserati or Lambo about 1/8 ahead of me on the highway. It was just a speck, but from 1/8 mile back I could tell that it was wide and low.
I finally caught up to it and it was a 928S.
Hmmmm. Similar character to that of the Pantera - certainly unique and timeless...and that V8 rumble made the same impression on me that the Pantera had back in the 70's.
I couldn't wait to get home to start researching 928's.
I really liked what I learned about the 928 and haven't looked back since.
I still love the Pantera, though
