Can I drive my 86 w/o the speedometer?
Well I give up! In addition to breaking off my speedometer needle spindle during my 5th repair attempt, my odometer has failed again. I'm sending it down to North Hollywood Speedometer for repair ($130 -$160).
The question is, can I drive the 928 without the speedometer installed? Will the absence of the gauge cause any harm to electronics?
Thanks,

If it did a lot of us would be in big trouble, neither of mine currently have working speedometers or odometers. If the cruise control stopped working at the same time, fair chance the 4 pin connector back the spare tire well needs cleaning. Odometer stops due to a certain gear going to mush, replacements are about $30.
Shouldn't cause any problems unless you drive too fast and get caught.

No problem at all. I had to do this about 15 years ago when the speedometer for my 79 failed. Took it out, sent it away to be fixed, and drove around with a big hole in the guage face.

Hi
You could always get a digital speedo...I use my GPS data logger and the screen is mounted just behind the steering wheel and shows speed and revs in red about an inch high...
All the best Brett

Me too. My speedometer is always a bit off; at 82 it reads about 72 (trooper will verify if you want!). This occured after breaking my alternator off and dragging the wires along the ground, I suppose shorting out something. I had recently gotten the car, and didn't have any place to put it up and fix it, so I brought it to a shop to do it for me. He had to guy a partial harness and affix it to the old one. Now, everything else works, but I use my iphone with the IHUD lite app for a nice digital display for accuracy. I guess you could always just calculate from rpms, though and memorize for each gear.

OK, thanks, I will drive with the big hole until the gauge is back. For Danglerb: Yes, I got the gear, followed the various and excellent instructions to a tee, but still had odometerfailure. New gear survives the failures, but odo still stops. Initially main odo fails to turn every mile with trip odo (about 1 main for 3 trip) then they both stop. I caught it in the act upon removal this last time. The new gear works well, but there is something causing the pawl in the single miles wheel of the main odometer gauge (not the trip) to not release and bind the gears up tight enough so the stepper motor just tries to turn but fails. Time for a professional gauge mechanic, so off to North Hollywood Speedometer it goes.
