Best Radar detector for the money
Anybody know of a good radar detector for the money, also I have a passport radar detector that doesn't work, maybe needs a battery,(has an opening for a pin type plug, maybe no battery?) is this older model any good, I got it with the 86.5 I bought from down south 2 months ago. ------ Bill

Top of the list...dont speed.
Second on the list, the best detector, is the muppet ahead of you about 300yds. Watch his brake lights..convert that to a loud "beep" that is now certainly emanating from -his- radar detector that was useless with an instant-on scenario.
Third on the list..dont lead, dont follow, dont drive aggressively (weaving in and out...)..
THEN once you mastered how to be as invisible as possible at speed, waste # on a detector.
I assume all bogeys are instant-on, which has superior king-fu to any detector.
I have a V1, and the last ticket I got about 3yrs ago..was a cop sitting in a known noise area that'd make it beep every day, day or night. Hasnt been used since, no tickets since. It let me get complacent. Same as using GPS in flight too much, my pilotage got weak, and that bothered me.

I follow Speedtoys tactics (sans any detector at all). 100% of the time someone will hit their brakes at the first site of a cop. Even if he is scraping a dead raccoon off the road. Problem is when you are by yourself...which is when Rule #1 applies.
I haven't used a detector since college...and ironically haven't had a speeding ticket since then either.
Drove a 100hp Toyota Tercel - got a ticket. Rode a Honda CBR - never got a ticket. Hopefully I can keep it that way.

The 9500ix is ahead of the V1 and the 9500Ci is way, way ahead.

If you want to look one at for less $$. I have a Bel Vector 995 and for less than $200, I would recommend.

I bought my second 9500ix yesterday. Got a new car for the wifey, GL 550.
I've got the 9500ix in the 928 and it's been pretty accurate and the false-alarm memory is nice.
K40 Calibre Bluetooth that the dealer installed to my 997 is a piece of ****. The install is nice, though, with the two leds in the vent. But the detector itself is an embarrasment when compared to 9500ix.
V1 is no longer competitive, in my opinion.
One feature that I'd like to get on the detector is the ability to tell apart and block the cruise control lasers that Infinitis have.

the STI-r had a really great feed horn, but with either of the two if you slammed on your brakes every time they went off you would never get any place.
folks that have never used a GPS RD just do not understand what a leap forward they are.

And that right there is just one of the reasons the V1 has not been the "King of the Hill" for some time, with a modern GPS detector it would have not made a peep until the cop was there, far better that the V1 IMHO and i have had the V1 and many others before.

Doesnt solve all circumstances, or teach 'safe' speeding skills, WRT avoiding The Man.
I still think that relying on a technology, makes for a sloppier pilot, car, plane, bike, bus....
Dont get me wrong, Im all for the fun run, just dont ask me to lead or be a back marker.

My subconscious is driving the car, doing 90% of the work, my conscious self..is pretty idle, just enjoying the scenery. I dont wanna focus on another disruptive input.
Maybe it's the pilot in me that wants -fewer- gadgets, as opposed to more.
I guess what im trying to say..is that real-time good habits and attentiveness is a proactive threat deterrent, where as real-time technology leads towards reactive threat -assessment-.
