Got to drive the MB McLaren SLR

That's cool, but I have to agree with your ending statement. 617hp @ 6,500RPM and 3,850lbs? A 500rwhp 928 would match that power for less than 1/10th of the price. And the 928 is a much more practical every day car, while still turning heads (albeit not like an SLR of course).

The combination between the torque and the A/T makes it the fastest accelerating car I've ever been in (at least thats what my SOP reaction tells me). And it does it with a lot less drama than the '68 Plymouth Sport Fury with a 426 Hemi, Hemi 4 speed, and Dana 60 with 5.12:1 gears that would pull the front wheels off the ground, which, until yesterday, held that record in my personal experiences.

Nice experience for you. The SLR has to be the ugliest high performance car ever. I can not look at one w/o remembering Inspector Clouseau as the old dentist working on Dreyfus with the prostetic nose that melts of his face.

But yes, there is no substitute for positive S/C low-end torque. Even in my car, right around 1,500RPM it is already over 300lb.ft at the wheels. My wife's C32 is similar except to a lesser magnitude. And I know exactly what you are talking about with the "delayed" shifts. My wife's C32 with the AMG speedshift 5-speed auto does exactly the same thing. It's like it was designed to be unabuseable.

SLR vs. 928
So here's the sick part of it all. If I had to choose between the two cars, knowing that I could never resell it or get the equity out of the SLR, I'd stick with the 928. I find it to be a much more enjoyable drive. The connection between car and driver, the engine note, seating position, all the things we 928 addicts love about the 928, aren't dimmed in the slightest by all the offerings of the SLR.
Yes when push comes to shove and its either this one or that one, often you think, well this one is worth 10x what that one's worth so the choice is obvious.
Interesting observations, the SLR i find especially intoxicating when painted black, but the traditional torque converter auto would never be the ideal starting point for any car.... and I have to imagine this would lead to the idea of missed opportunity in the case of the SLR.
I do like the proportions of the SLR, but allot of the detailing leaves me wondering why the editing eye never came into play. I think the tail lamps look cheap, like those that come from a chinese factory made for hondas. The car also has far to many gills and slats for my taste. The interior too seems to be a bit dated today, but I would say the same for the SLS and that car is about a year old.
