Not much history online, but this 2007 Saab reference, pointing out exactly 30 years earlier the reveal of the turbo Saab.
Also, wikipedia references the Frankfurt show as a sept/oct occurence biannually.
The biannual part started in early 90's.
But it looks like the Frankfurt show was held in early Sept 1977.
Edit: the W123T estate was also introduced at the show, here's a line from a web search --- At the Frankfurt Auto Show in September, 1977 the W123T estate was introduced;

Thanks Landseer! Mustve missed the modifyer, exactly 30...
I just noticed the pic w/Ferry on the hood shows the car fitted w/custom Recaros.
These are not the same seats used at the show.
Two other differences in said pic are the car is licensed, and a early type wiper spoiler was added.

Exclusive 928 photos from the 1977 Geneva Auto Salon and a bit of early 928 show car history...

Never did land the '78 basket case that I wanted to turn into a Geneva tribute car. Still think about it, but no room in the stable now anyway. Anyway, if I did it now, I'd likely start with a nice condition '85 or '86. Sad, because the owner decided not to sell it to me, but instead sold it to some 15 year old kid who mangled it trying to get it running (never had a chance, despite my help) and then sold it to be parted. Would have been sweet.

The story, writen by my friend and porsche author Johnny Tipler, is about the discovery of this much (maybe the most) sought after 928.
Where, when and how it was found, after 20 years in a basement, are the main theme of the article.The rest is a bonus... :-)

Ferry Porsche sitting on front of each new model for marketing photo was long time tradition. There is 964 in Finland which got same treatment when it was new.
