Default ATF question

My car 928 S4

How much fluid is needed when the mark is below the min and starting at the other mark on the reservoir (not the max)? Is it a quart of fluid per mark? I drove the car around and warmed her up to see what is my actual level on the car. I noticed a few slips so i decided to lift her up and see the actual level. I did a flush a few weeks ago and thought it was perfect, but did not get to drive her very much since the transmission fluid change.

I did check the level in neutral.

Anyways, just curious of what each mark meant. I had no time to top her off today due to my wife waiting on me.

The factory manual only said to see the dealer if the fluid was to low. LOL

thanks jpc

So would half quart actual cause my transmission to slip when driving it hard?

I did not have an issue until the the fluid change. I am wondering if i should have used a different brand for my fluid change. I originally only did the fluid change due to a huge transmission leak. I initial found the leak in the reservoir, it was glued by someone to keep it from leaking due to being cracked. I replaced all the seals that connects to the pan and the res.

These Mercedes transmissions are supposedly very sensitive to fluid volume. I use an inspection mirror and flash light to check my level after filter R&R so that I can leave it on it's wheels. Takes a few tries to find the right combination of light and mirror position but it is not bad once you get the hang of it.

My 89's AT is sensitive to fluid level. As long as you use Dexron II spec or better, I don't think it matters what you use. I usually use Mobil 1 ATF (about $7/qt), but I have used Shell Mercon/Dexron III and my AT is still going strong at 221K miles despite a lot of abuse.

Of the three marks, the lowest is the cold max. That's what I use when filling, but then I check after driving for 10 -15 minutes using the upper 2 marks which are hot min and max, aiming to be between them.

About a month ago I changed fluid and filter (3rd time in 12mos) in this 85 car that sat idle for 10 years. This time with "valvoline higher mileage" fluid I'm not experiencing 2/3 flare slippage. Keeping an eye on it, not enough experience yet, but it truly it is working better. Had been using mobil 1.

This is not enough experience to recommend it of course.

Oh and i used the valvoline high mileage as-well. I am hoping the top/off fixes my problems.
