a quick word about SEM dyes....
_
i imagine there's a few guys who've had good experiences using SEM and duplicolor spray dyes
to refresh interior pieces or change the colors out... a very nice guy on the 944 forums was in the process
of picking up some SEM dye (an absolutely fabulous product) to use on his leather, 968 seats....
thought i'd post my thoughts about using SEM on leather to save people from harming their seats.....
here's the post:
a word of caution about using SEM on leather seats....
i have used SEM to change the color of the front section of my interior from grey to black and got a great result....
love the SEM products.
your seats—NOOOOOOOOOOOO
SEM SPRAY DYES ARE NOT FOR YOUR LEATHER SEATS !! CAN'T DO IT....
your seats were colored through a special tanning and dye process by artists using trillion dollar equipment.
SEM dye is not going to help at all. SEM dyes do not penetrate the leather surface or form microscopic beads.
what the SEM will do is form a shell and crack from the motion and stretching of the leather.
in other words, YOU'LL DESTROY THE SURFACE OF YOUR LEATHER WITH THAT STUFF.
if you ever hear of anyone talking about using a vinyl or carpet spray die from SEM or Dupli-color
on leather please use all of your powers of pursuasion to stop them from doing that -- thanks for reading...

I used SEM products on my seat 3 or 4 years ago. They looked great for about 3 months, and have been cracking and flaking ever since. When I get a chance I'll post some before and after photos.
I've 'heard' others have had good results with Lethrique dye products... if I recall properly.

if you're thinking of refreshing seats, here's some cool photos from the 944 forum:

HOLY CRAP GREG !!!
when i bought my car the interior was all grey... it didn't go with my new black on charcoal sparcos, and i wanted something that would also match my new black, carbon wheel... the top of my dash and door sils were burnt pretty bad, with these nasty, charcoal and purple colors.... (my 911/996 airbag was also grey like the rest of my interior).

anyway, the SEM product is very good... i sanded the dash with 40 grit and filled in the cracks with black devcon epoxy.... next sanding with 100, 150 etc and finishing with SEM after a good prep. still trying to find this great "how to" video i had a few months back.... anyway,
after getting your surface free of cracks you would be using.
1. SEM soap or bleach solution followed up with alcohol and clean towels...
2. SEM vinyl prep...
3. applying the SEM finish using about 3-5 light applicatoins.
SEM is probably ok for static leather pieces on airbags and doors. (my airbag is leather) and the SEM was perfect for changing it to black.
i believe that doing leather seats should be left to the professionals....
however, for small touch up, my weapon of choice might not be for everyone, but you can try it on an inconspicuous part of your seats, even to change the color !!...... i've used it successfully to completely refresh other black leather seats that are now in one of my 2 Ford Escapes. (my sparcos don't need anything done yet)...
just cut that baby in half with a hacksaw and pry out your 2 applicators, after donning rubber gloves.
place one side in tinfoil and seal with some good tape.
glide the other applicator over your leather while (very gently) squeezing until the proper amount of color is applied.
let dry overnight.... then massage with a good leather conditioner/moisturizer from ace hardware.

i have repainted VINYL carseats with sem. 3 years ago, they look like new , it does not come off.
degreasing is the key to get a good result.
i used siliconremover,,a solvent used by body reprayers. removes cockpitspray (silicone) , dust and grease. didnt sand anything,
i have used a spraygun.

This is what you need to refresh leather components. I've used it and it works great. One word of caution, use gloves. I didn't and I had two BLACK hands for about a week and a half. It was horrible. http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/s...&p_keyword=dye
