Default What's the sharktuner equivalent for 996?

We have a '99 996 that blew up a 3.4L engine. I had a 3.6 put in, along with an RPM switch for the variocam plus.

The ECU was "reflashed" for the 3.6 fuel maps, but the tune really isn't all that great. I'd like to be able to to monitor/tune the 996 in the same way I do my 928.

The 996 forum has a lot different feel to it. I couldn't really find an answer to the question by searching. So I thought I'd post it here first.

Someone must make software that permits for measuring and tuning the 996 ECU, since people are also selling "flash" versions of them. I want a custom tune, not just some "flash" that should work okay but doesn't really.

Who makes tuning software for the 996s, what would I need to buy, how much does it cost and where can I find it?

Thanks for anyone who's gone down this road.

I always just used a timing light on my '71 Super Beetle. The 996 should be about the same thing, just 2 more cylinders.

I'm just kidding!!!!

I looked into this a while back.. yours is a '99 C2? It has Motronic 5.3 from memory.. in which case it *might* be possible to find a definition file for Tunerpro. There was a guy claiming he could produce definition files for Motronic up to and including 5.x to work with Tunerpro on various Audi/BMW boards, but his last post I could find on any forums was in '06.

996's from '00-onwards (and '99 C4's) use Motronic 7.x and drive-by-wire throttle, which is the domain of the big expensive tuning gear (GIAC etc.). Initially Motronic 7.2, and then in '02 (and '01 turbo/GT3) Porsche switched to Motronic 7.8

If the tunerpro avenue comes to naught, the most cost effective option seems to be aftermarket - something like VEMS etc.

One other option is companies who provide DIY tuning software for other OBD-II cars with similar ECU's (e.g. Audi S4 has Motronic 7.0/7.1 and the 4-banger Audi B5 turbo's have 5.x).. ask if their expertise can be readily adapted to the Porsche equivalent 5.x and 7.x series'. They could corner a whole new market (Boxsters and '996's), if they're willing to make the leap.

I concluded that we were very lucky to have JDS Porsche around, and promptly bought a Sharktuner II

Not sure what you mean by "The ECU was "reflashed" for the 3.6 fuel maps, but the tune really isn't all that great".

Not really sure what you are looking for as far as tuning... DIY, just adding headers, turbos, Supercharging etc, what is your end result you are looking for? Look for a Indy that uses dyno's and can either use a piggyback tuning kit or that actually can hack the Porsche Gnome and tune the stock ECU to what you have put into your car. FVD has some good tuners and have worked on my Custom SC in the past however do not think they do that anymore. GL

You may want to try cannot vouch for though,
