1988 928 5 Speed Super Shark Stage III S4 for sale
1988 928 S4
5 speed transmission
Limited Slip Differential
Air conditioning
Sunroof
Black paint, seats, interior
Water pump and timing belt, all related seals and gears, pulleys etc. were done approximately 9000 miles back
Looking to get $15,000 or best offer (edited to drop price 2-8-2011)
mileage:
100,000 total miles.
approx. 50,000 miles on speedometer.
The speedometer reads approximately 50,000 less than the actual miles due to speedometer replacement according to the previous owner. To make it more interesting before I bought it I checked with CarFax and it reports the most recent mileage reading as only 9000 miles, obviously with a mileage discrepancy flag. The documentation I have pretty much mirrors the CarFax record of mileage until the last title change and then they drop it to 9000 miles ?!?!
This was an issue with me at first until I met the previous owner, read the documented repair history from him and the owner before him, looked at the dates and milage on the reciepts etc. etc. all that and the fact that he was telling me that the car had 50,000 more miles on it than the speedo reads instead of trying to tell me it should read less than it does....why Pennsylvania reported the milage as only 9000 miles at the last title change we don't know but I've been in and under the car including replacing rod bearings which looked really good (so good I stopped with just doing the #6 bearing)... and seen what is original and what has been replaced...seen the condition of the parts I replaced and 100,000 actual miles seems right to me. I wish I could give you a more definitive report but it is what it is. I'm confidant that when you read the reciepts, drive the car, inspect the car etc you will be confident with your decision like I was when I bought it.
This is a well cared for car, sleeps in my garage and doesn't get driven much at all. In the last 3.25 years I've driven it a total of 14,600 miles.
It is a very fast car with a well tuned Murf Supershark stage 3 supercharger system.
I started out taking care of all the mechanical stuff and planned on replacing the interior stuff with a custom leather interior. The mechanical is all done other than a few minor things and the interior hasn't been done although it is quite nice as is considering the age.
It will come with every tool and spare part i have, for example I have a spare intake manifold and throttle body...

As of @ 4/1/09 approximately under 6000 miles:
* new Michelin Pilot Sports tires
* refurbished MAF
* refurbished LH
Known Issues (I'll post more if I find them and take pictures of as much of this as I can and post them soon):
* The AC compressor is on my work bench right now. Took it out to replace seals, it was working before removing it but leaked refrigerant, losing the ability to cool within about one week of charging it. I have a new TXV and all the seals for the system, everything to convert it to 134A, oil, flush, etc.
* The front spoiler has a repair done to it with an aluminum sheet inside and out layered like a sandwich, aluminum/spoiler/aluminum, riveted through the three layers. It isn't easy to see unless you bend way down and look for it.
* The pod is cracked, not terribly.
* The sun roof functions and seals but I don't use it much and it wants to stick (not open) if you haven't used it recently. You can lay a hand on the top when you hit the button and give it a little encouragement to move and it opens right up. I'm guessing I should lube it but I never got around to it because I don't use it.
* The rear hatch doesn't open from the remote, the motor and switch work but it binds in the reciever and doesn't pop up. Also the shock doesn't always hold the hatch up. Might just be a frequency of use thing...sometimes it holds sometimes it creeps down.
* Getting a weeping of steering fluid from the reservoir itslef, metal part of lines and rack were done before I bought the car but the reservoir is original. Very very slow loss of fluid, haven't got around to buying a new reservoir.
* The interior is in decent condition, no tears in seats except one seam in drivers seat is starting to loosen up. A mismatch of door panels, driver side looks like real leather at handle, passenger looks like fake leather (took me two years to even notice this...). Some of the interior has been refurbished by previous owner all in all it is quite nice but certainly not concourse material
* Anti-Lock warning light comes on. I've replaced the relay, that wasn't it since the light won't come on until you hit a bump while driving...it can go for a hundred yards or 25 miles before coming on, it all depends on how smooth the roads are but I wanted to be sure so I replaced the relay anyway. I replaced the worst of the wiring harnesses thinking that was obviously it but it wasn't the only one with worn insulation and I suspect one or more of the other three is responsible for the warning light coming on. I believe the harnesses are around $45 each.
I'll be driving it some this weekend and if I discover or remember anything else I'll update this list as well as update the list of things I've done to improve the car. I've done a lot of work to it and this post is a copy-and-paste I've cobbled together off of a couple of lists I've kept to document the work I've done so there are probably other improvements and maintenance I've forgotton to include.
Basically this is a fast, sound running car with above average to good appearance and a very few possible few gremlins left to surprise someone. I've done some serious preventive stuff, for example, I took the Central Electric panel out and cleaned with a brass brush every fuse and relay contact and inspected every wire on the back for any sign of problems and replaced all the relays.
I wouldn't hesitate to trust this car on a cross country journey.
And of course plenty of pictures will be coming soon after it gets another bath...just drove it in the rain so it needs a cleaning.
I haven't been on the forum much lately since everything is running so well (knock on wood) so I'm not up to date on the current market so any input toward the pricing is of course welcome (and it is rennlist so you know that is coming anyway whether I like it or not right? )

Sounds exceptionally well priced. Basically a good, solid, mechanically well cared for, 5 speed for 8 grand....... net of the supershark kit.
Man this economy has done some damage.

I'd fix the A/C and any other small items. I'd say $16k is a bit high in this economy though, even for a well sorted SC'd Shark like yours.

With everything that he is including in the sale, this is one hell of a deal.

I'd agree... hella deal.
You could sell the extra stuff seperately to yeild more money.
Or set them aside to throw into a negotiation to "sweeten the pot".

Murph Stage III, Shark Tuner, lift bars, V32, shop manuals and all the other goodies makes this one hell of a deal for someone looking to jump in with both feet starting from scratch. That's not a real likely combination to be found around here... either people already have some of this stuff or they are a noob that isn’t going to know what this ‘other’ stuff is or does. Therefore, I’d suggest selling off some of the goodies independent of the car… unless you think that is too much of a hassle.
