When I first posted I didn't notice any ill will toward myself, but maybe I am too dense to notice. I have gotten a ton out of the site so far and an on becoming a member even if I don't get a 928 in the near future.

Funny, that's pretty much the answer I got when I was a "user" and asked it as my first question.

OK, I'm just being facetious. It was one of my first questions.

A 'member' seems to garner more respect, because he paid his $18.00 for the tag, access to OT, or what not. But please tell my why they don't deserve to have the same amount of respect as any other individual on these forums? We have, around us, quite a few knowledgeable members, with low post counts, who are not members, but any time they post something, people **** out on them.

Sure, I've been a member before I posted my first post. I felt that the information I gathered from this forum was worth the monies. But for others, I can see exactly why they don't bother to fork over the cash. A few uppity douchnozzels that want to point out that "Hey, your not a member, you only have 7 posts, what's your agenda?"

Sorry guys, that kind of stuff is bull****, and a nice way of getting others to not fork over the $$ to support the site, and loose some knowledge that someone might want to share.

Try to remember what it was like the first time you got on Rennlist.
Sean, I agree with You 100%. However it is only a few very visible loudmouths that do this. This is an open forum. It is possible to read and even post without being a paying member, Is that a bad thing ? I dont think so. Every question and every (polite) answer has a value, and may come in handy for anyone of us later on.

But Sean, You missed the big difference between a paying member and a sponsor. If You post a valid complaint about a sponsor, You will be fried bigtime. You would be better of being a North Korean saying that Kim Sung Il (or whatever) has a small dick, than complaining about a 2 month delay on a 928 Specialist delivery.

Moderators ?

See the attached screendump - that is one of the mature guys that are supposed to keep good order and ensure a constructive and civilized discussion forum. Achievements so far are nothing to be proud of - as far as I can see he is just adding to the fire.

It is not only the non-paying users that can get a rough treatment in here, in many cases the atmosphere is pure venom.

And why ? Because You have another point of view or is dissatisfied with a 2 month delay from a sponsor ? What kind of level is that ?

I'm still trying to work out what a 'lug wrench' is let alone where to store it.

I never really looked, but it appears that most around here are either users or addicts... what are we talking about again? Oh yeah, membership.

I’m somewhat active on probably 4 or 5 different boards and this is the only one that charges or attempts to charge fees to contributors as well as sell ads and vendor sponsorships. I’m pretty sure the people collecting the fees are not the same ones generating value by contributing knowledge. I’ve always found that at least somewhat intriguing, especially those that point out the non-members.

Maybe they should use some of the fees to hire professional moderators. Otherwise, one should take moderators in moderation. After all, I believe they are volunteers, but I could be wrong.

I agree Sean, this forum can be pretty harsh on new members. The days of supporting John D to help keep this site up are gone, advertisers pay for this forum now and the fact that we all continue to encourage membership is somewhat silly IMHO.

My membership gets me 400meg of hosting space on RL's server. May not be tons of space, but great for hosting pictures/movies for threads etc. I've only used 175meg so far. That's why I've been a member on and off for years.

Posting in OT only gets me in trouble, so I try to stay away from that.

Current business model for lists I understand is for our traffic to be used to sell advertising.

So funny thing is maybe we should be being paid to be members. Doesn't utube do that?

The loyal days of paying to keep John in cashflow to run the site are long gone. Let's be honest, surely part of the reason he developed this site was to build traffic over time to sell it. Of course, as well as providing a great service for us!

like above posts;

Back in the day when it was run by JD out of his kitchen in the very beginning there may have been a reason to "support" a message board. Before the board had vendors as sponsors and before there was general advertising banners and lots of eye *****. I would have bought a rennlist cap that cost $6 to make for $20.

For all those who actually believe paying a fee is necessary to keep this board up or even does something for the 928 consider these;

Some questions;

Why is this the only board owned by IB that needs to be supported? click right here

Why if running this board was such a headache and lifestyle drag on JD did he start up RW?

Does anyone really think a board needs to be supported and can't make a profit on ads and sponsors? (its an effective tool for sponsors)(what about 6 speed, teamspeed, lux4play, pelican, petrolheads, and many more, etc)

I personally would pay for a site like the one I described in the recent 928OC threads. That would be the best for the 928 community not paying for a few DE's for a few people. So if you want to pay money for the 928's future, invest in that. As for fixing the car, I have always used the Owners manual first and discussed issues with vendors who I bought from. The info here comes from individuals not the servers owner. And there will always be another server ready and willing and begging for the eyeballs that congregate here. BTW costs are cheaper than ever. If you feel like helping out IB, that is great, I have no problem with that, but the numbers claiming poverty did not add up even way back, so its more of a peer pressure thing.

Why does anyone here tell another person to become a member since it is CLEARLY not necessary to keep a message board going? Just to be able to knock someone?

I come here for entertainment and for the inspiration a very few provide like Greg Grays engine odyssey, Mike S, the west coast engine guru, P. Champagne, and the leather shop. I also enjoy the vast majority of the community, but there have been those that needed a little more guidance in their posting. Fortunately moderation has improved. But difference between User and Member. None. Everyone makes their own reputation by their posts and personality.

If my post bothers IB, I have no problem with its removal.

I was a paying member until Gretch antagonized and chased Mason from here and every other 928 forum.

Thanks for the replies peeps. I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one that this annoys. Wanted to post this years ago, but didn't until now.

I have no issue paying for this site, the entertainment in OT/PC is worth the bucks, add in the information that is available here is priceless. I just don't think it should be held over someones head if they choose not to. As was said above, if someone is doing some bagging on someone, and they have low post counts, I too will go back and look at past posts to see if this is the norm, and judge accordingly. It has nothing to do with membership.

I give 5x as much to John D at RW for the good work he is doing, than I give here in 'membership' fee's. It's just how I choose to spend some of my munee's.

FWIW, I didn't know where to put the lug wrench until I searched and saw BB's post on it

New folks come to renny and find out about the GREAT community and our valued vendors. They engage, with near zero context and expect things to go their way, without any history or understanding of the people, circumstances and personalities involved.

They get hurty feelers when their expectations are not met and find it appropriate to vent their spleen to this community as if their experience is somehow a great revelation to the world.

In my frustration, I am guilty of reacting to such behavior in a non-helpful way.

Someone here complained that the difference between "user" and "member" is a focal point for bias.......

Perhaps the more accurate terms to be used for discussing and evaluating appropriare behavior (and reactions by the community) are "member of the community" vs "I wanna join the club".

There seems also an assumption by some new folks, that the valued vendors of this community are somehow not part of this community. Like it is some sort of "we" - "they" relatonship, making it ok to come here and crap on the long standing vendors who have earned their credibility and RESPECT, as if they are not just valued members of this community, but personal friends of many, as well.

To wit: how many people react well to being told, by a complete stranger, that one of their valued friends is "no good"??? Not many, if ANY. However THAT is nearly exactly what SOME users with limited history and exposure to this community seem to think is appropriate behavior........

It is not.

The truth is "members-of-this-community" earn their respect and credibility, over time...... That social concept seems to have been lost in the internet age.

And Sean, I would like to know where you believe the proper location for the lug wrench is............ ??

FBIII, you give me vastly too much credit.

Right next to the impact gun in the tool box, don't have a spare or compressor in the car anyhow.

Make sure you lude your nuts well before inserting and you won't need an impact gun to whack them off!
