Members Vs Users
Here is a comment that has annoyed me since I joined up. If you are not a 'member' in the 928 community, then your comments are not viewed as equal as those who are 'members'. Now why is that?
A 'member' seems to garner more respect, because he paid his $18.00 for the tag, access to OT, or what not. But please tell my why they don't deserve to have the same amount of respect as any other individual on these forums? We have, around us, quite a few knowledgeable members, with low post counts, who are not members, but any time they post something, people **** out on them.
Sure, I've been a member before I posted my first post. I felt that the information I gathered from this forum was worth the monies. But for others, I can see exactly why they don't bother to fork over the cash. A few uppity douchnozzels that want to point out that "Hey, your not a member, you only have 7 posts, what's your agenda?"
Sorry guys, that kind of stuff is bull****, and a nice way of getting others to not fork over the $$ to support the site, and loose some knowledge that someone might want to share.
Try to remember what it was like the first time you got on Rennlist.

I asked what oil to use in my 944S. I was told to use the search engine, which didn't answer my question since there were only a dozen threads.
Then some jack-*** told me to read the FAQ which only had questions up to that point, they were still working on the answers.

Nobody started out here knowing it all, and nobody instantly had a thousand posts, and few if any can say that they 'know it all' no matter what the post count. Many have the time, patience, knowledge and experience to 'contribute' regularly. Just as easily, with access to the "search" function, one could mine a whole bunch of very helpful info without ever posting once. I can also suggest that 'post count' is hardly a valid measure of a particular user's knowledge, enthusiasm, or value to the group as a resource. I'm reminded of that whenever I happen to slip and fall into the OT storm drain.
Membership? I posted here for a while before I donated to JD's support fund. I can easily say that I've gained huge multiples of membership costs from the group's accumulated knowledge and experience. So to me it's been a great investment. Others may not see or appreciate those benefits and may choose not to be a member; That is always their right. It doesn't affect my us o the service one way or the other. It may affect the way IB is able to meter their ad reveue, though, and that does keep the service 'on the air' here.
Just my ramblin...

Sean, when I used that maybe I should have used the words "Using another sign on name instead of your regular one"
As long as they are not hiding behind a alias I see no difference in a user and a member, with the exception of commitment, just like a lifetime member is going to be more committed than a member is, at least for the length of time.
It bothers me to no end when people use a alias to bitch, they do not have enough ***** to use their real names.
So if that was directed at me, then I am guilty of at least that much.

Uhh, what respect are you talking about?
I think your taking it way to personal... Are to pay for every single forum we use? No, i think not... It's of "more value" to contribute to any board with valuable-helpful intellectual facts(valueble), then anything monetery(cheap)..

I don't notice a difference and rarely look at a poster's status, other than when someone is trying to sell something.
As for myself, I was a non-member for a long time. I use dozens of forums over the course of a year and as a matter of principal I don't pay for them unless/until I get something tangible for it. Otherwise I'd be paying hundreds in memberships per year. There's no question that rennlist is worth the money though.

This pisses me off to no end... and one of the reasons I spend more time on other sites at times.... the way the moderators berate the "Newbies" doesn't show well for the community and probably pushes away lots that would otherwise sign up for membership.
Same thing happens when a "user" asks questions..and the first response is.. sign up for a membership...and then we'll answer kind of deal... I think many new 928 owners have a vested interest in staying around..but if they get a cold reception..what's to keep them around and become members...

I was on here for some time before I became a member. Just cheap I guess, but I joined because there were restrictions on my posts and what I could view. I'm here for the technical information. Members with lots of posts are recognized as creditable, knowledgable and usually helpful.
There is a lot of disinformation on the internet and some of that disinformation is right here on this forum and the other ones. But that disinformation doesn't come from long time members with a reputation of knowing what they are talking about. Two examples (not to discredit the multitude of listers who know there **** when it comes to 928's): If Wally Plumley and/or Jim Bailey (and there are others) posts something, it's gospel as far as I'm concerned. At the same time there are some that I have to listen to with a grain of salt. In other words verify, verify, verify! I don't need to do that with Wally or Jim.
Someone who is not a member has no reputation with me or this group. It's just human nature to be suspecious of the new guy. Users may be just feeling us out to decide if they want to stay. I've also seen some users that drop in just to stir up some ****. YMMV

I never look to see if someone is a member or not. I'll also answer a question if I have the answer handy rather than telling them to look for it. If not, I'll tell them to search, like I do. It seems to stick better if you search and find it rather than just get told. At least for me it does.
