Green wire function?

Working engine compartment issues today I looked at what I believe is the green wire. It is a single green wire that runs from a connecter near the 14 pin connector on the passenger side accross the engine to the base of the distributor.
The passenger side plug end is deteriorating (crumbling abd looks it would fall apart if touched). What does the green wire do and what symptoms would I have if it is bad?
Anyway to test? What do they cost? Hopefully not NLA!
Thanks

This carries the critical signal of the distributor turning. It provokes the spark. If it's not right, your car will run like crap or not at all.

I believe it also triggers the fuel pump relay. If distributor is not turning green wire does not transmit an electro magnetic pulse that triggers points in the fuel pump relay. It is a safety measure--if you have an accident and the engine is not running you do not want the fuel pumps pushing gas all over the place. If the green wire is faulty fuel pumps will not come on or stay on when cranking to start.

Can cause all kinds of intermittent timing issues.....similar wire is used on many 911s. Most professionals will not even attempt to trouble shoot running problems without a NEW green wire ! Just think of it as the wires from your pacemaker to your heart

Simple to change just needs to be the correct wire with correct fittings. You do need to pull up the distributor and get it back down and indexed properly so mark the location BEFORE (both housing and rotor) and get it back where it was.

Thanks all for the valuable input and advice!
I have a spare engine that cme with the car and it has a green wire with good looking connectors. Once I get the fuel lines replaced I will hopefully get it running and see if it is an issue. Last time I tried to start it a couple of months ago it started immediately and then died. In tank pump was dead which lead to the last two months of dropping tank for spinning insert and half shaft refresh while I had the extra working room.
