There is no such thing as a cheap GT. If it needs that, it needs a lot more. Exterior and mechanicals can be brought back for probaly $8k more. Interior, if needed, another $3k. So you're looking at a $18k GT. I think if you wait and shop around you can get one in nice shape for roughly the same, maybe a bit more and a whole lot less work.
What's the budget?

What is a PPI? if it is an inspection then the tires should be thier only concern.
The belt you can do your self. A gates belt cost me $80 at pelican. Others will tell you to replace the idlers and water pump while you are in there. I did not as I have no problem checking it my self.

just had a ppi done on a gt with 150 k.right off the bat car needs paint, tires, and timing belt.price agreed on is 7 k.any thoughts?
What year, 89, 90 or 91, the differences are significant, PSD vs locking diff., air bags vs non, etc.
Any 928 with 150K is going to need a lot more than a belt and tires. How is the interior. Does the A/C work? What do the brakes and shocks look like? Any aftermarket mods? Can the paint be saved or is it done to metal or primer? What kind of body damage exists, dings, scraps etc. Does it come with documentation of prir work?

Hi,
I saw a 90 GT, 5-speed, w/ sunroof for sale in the Panorama (Porsche Club) magazine classified ads, July issue. The 928 was in NJ, had 77k miles and the seller was asking $11.5k. Sounded like a pretty good deal.

Bill, paint would kill that screaming deal right there dude. I had $10k worth of paint work done on my '92 at a great shop (but not nearly the best shop in town) and that didn't even paint the whole car... Most of it, but not the drivers door, front fender, hood or roof (or sunroof or hatch or wing for that matter)... So, you are saying that adding $13k+ in paint to a $7k GT that also needs T-belt, etc is a good deal? I guess if it were a GTS it would be but NOT a GT.
Now if the OP can do the paint and mechanical work on his own... BAM! Then it is a good deal! Paint is a killer if you can't shoot it yourself AND you actually want a really good job! Even an average total repaint with you doing some of the work is probably going to cost $8k+

Another PPI that points out the obvious...
I'd worry more about engine compression, cooling system pressure test, transmission (& clutch) and interior. If the "biggies" checked out okay, $7K is an incredible price. Hell, a couple years ago many of us paid that much for OBs!
I'm with Bill, I'd do tires, TB/WP, and dump all fluids regardless--so that's already a sunk cost.

thats only the tip of the iceberg.broken front swaybar mount,no air, brackes sticking and possible noise in rear end are a few more of the bigger items, then there is a ton of small stuff.
