That was me! What are the odds? Small world. Nice to finally meet you (kind of). I kept it slow because the car was dancing a bit with the bumps in the roads and i wanted to take in some of the scenery . I'm glad it didn't have a new suspension, as I would have to replace it. The American recovery act for roads program is a big rip off as some of the repairs are just as bad.
I think I do just that
start with the fuel lines, Timing belt/tensioner , pulleys etc
Anyone know where I can get a diagnostic tool for keeps?
Thanks
Charles

Some info
A/C doesn't work. No belt (At minimum, lots of heat through the vents with everything off.
Also fan bearings appear to make a noise at low speed.
Horn doesn't work, so no inspection in VA
Sound system sucks. No radio but one station. Crank it up and you still can;t hear it. Driver side speakers missing screens and no sound. (Looking to upgrade this in the future with DVD NAV, B/T ans some type of speakers that will fit without drilling.
Seats are nice, but passenger seat electrics seem bad.
Suspension sounds like it needs work, but feels tight with the exception of uneven pavement. kind of pulls you a little.
Thanks for the info

I would ignore your long list of faults - they are all normal; basically features, not faults. Do the TB and be happy.
jk.
Anyway peck away at them over time.
Completely forget the engine rebuild unless you have a concrete reason. Mine has never been rebuilt. Same with the tranny rebuild. Forget the chips too - they do nothing for an S4. Cams can do something, but get the rest of the car back to snuff before you venture into engine mods. Xpipe and other exhaust mods are fun and useful. Stock stabilizer bars are fine. You mention a bunch of other things, like clutch, brakes, suspension, shocks. Yes, all those things should be inspected. Fix things that are broken or worn out, like loose tie rods and balljoints, noisy wheel bearings, bad bushings, split boots, weak shocks but only if they are bad or getting there. You have a bunch of common small issues, like the sunroof, radio, horn, hatch release and non-working AC that should only take a day or so to diagnose and fix. If your pan gasket is leaking, do the motor mounts at the same time. Find some of the other local owners to help you.
Oh, the car looks damn nice - I'm jealous of the sport seats.
Was this car on Craigslist in the Seattle area? I was trying to get a buddy up there to look at it for himself. Looks like he missed a nice one.

Hi Bill and thanks for the advise. I'm finding this forum invaluable. thats what I was telling my wife. She was upset her seat (The passenger seat) motors didn't work and about the shaking when backing up. I told her it was over 20 years old it would have some problems. When I accelerated and she was sucked into the seat, she quickly forgot about everything else.
This car was on craigslist in Seattle. The seats are really comfortable, but at 45, I have to wait for hot chicks to move on before trying to get out. I'm thinking of getting Paul to redo them minus the piping as its a hump thats hard to get over without a six pack.
I called the owner and tried to get him to drop the price by enough to do the TB/WP, but no dice. After about an hour he got fed up and told me to look elsewhere that he had many offers from all over. He called my bluff and I asked him to take it off the market. He agreed and I booked a flight to Seattle (An adventure within itself after many cancelled flights and delays).
I go there and drove it. Spent the night got some sleep and hit the road back Sunday waving at Tom on the way out of town.
Thanks
Charles

Nice to meet you..even in passing Charles... One note.. most sport seats are only 4 way electric adjust..meaning up/down front and up/down back. The front to back slider is a lever near the center console..and the seatback recline..is the lever on the outside front of the seat..

great looking ride, I have been shopping for one for a while, funny how the best deals are in washington oregon or cali. also Maine?? go figure... I just picked up mine tonight. might have jumped the gun, but we will see, It's a 81 euro, auto. 129,000 all the parts are there and seem to work. a/c is in a box. Interior is ROUGH, but 90% there, It has a cheap repaint, (wish they hadn't), I got it to play with, so I don't know if it's going back to original-ish. Or....gut it out to make my own 928 RS, only paid $2,500 Friend of mine had a green one like that, gutted with roll bar and it was stupid fast. It's in Richmond too. Which was my original reason for replying. I am in Richmond also... can't wait to see yours scooting around short pump???

Congrats on your new ride. I'm sure you will love it. I wanted Black/Black with 5 Spd and 32 V motor and of course in my price range, so that means travel. I was hoping to run into some folks in Richmond. I live in Moseley down 288, but work in the West end at the old Koger Center. My wife and I were out for a spin this past weekend in Short Pump and stopped to get some cheesecake at the Cheesecake Factory (Adams Peanut Butter cup Fudge Ripple). Still have the shakes from the sugar rush.
I don't really know that many people in town here yet that have 928s. But I don't get off my chain that often either. I have only seen a couple of 944s, Boxters, and 911s in town and I have recently seen a couple of 928s toward town on Broad street at a small dealer. He had 3; a Blue auto , a Black Auto , and a Brownish manual.
Maybe we can get together and help each other out working on them. In about 10 months I hope to put a lift in my garage once I have save the cash. I'm working on getting the specific tools for most repairs as well. I'll PM you with my contact info.
Thanks again and enjoy your ride.

Sorry we didn't have a chance to formally meet, maybe our paths will cross again sometime.
I saw those levers, but with her in the seat I didn't want to mess with them. I was afraid they may be emergency ejection levers and then I would have to sell it.
Thanks for the info.

The first thing you should do is check the timing belt tension. Since your belt was border line loose, couple of turns on the adjuster is WAY too much. This can easily bend the pivot bolt and eventually cause the belt to slowly chew itself apart on the crank and water pump pulley sides.

I agree with the rest, get that timing belt looked at before you drive it any further. I have tensioned the belt and I can tell you first hand a small turn of the tensioner bolt make a big difference in belt tension.
The car looks great, triple black is the best, other then the outside constantly needs cleaning. Sounds like you got a good car that just needs a little bit of love.
