How many miles do you get to a new set of tires?

My Mich Pilot AS Plus have 13K on them and the rears are almost gone. Nearly all highway travel. No burnouts, very little hard cornering. Mich is covering them under treadwear warranty. supposed to be a 40K tire. Fronts look brand new. Alignment is spot on and so is ride height.

I agree with you Bob, I will not buy life over performance for a 928. So out of the dozen or so brands of ultra/max/high performance summer tires, it looks like 4-12K miles is about what I can expect. If that is true, I will stick with the cheaper Sumitomo HTR Z III as i was happy with handling and grip, but was a little concerned about the short life.

Do you get a lot of "whirring" tread noise from those HTRZ lll's?
I am running Goodyear F1's that have an almost identical pattern, and they howl like banshees.

The "quiet" part of the PS-2's is pretty darn wonderful. I don't have RMB or X/H pipe so no loud exhaust noises to mask noisy tire symptoms. I've ridden in only a few other 928's that were quiet enough to hear just the tires, and none are nearly as quiet as the PS-2's. Flip side is that they are a bit spendy, especially compared with some of the Kumhos. It would be pretty hard to go back to noisy tires to save maybe $100/yr though.
Figuring out the DIY alignment stuff more than doubled tire life on my car, BTW. Inside rear edge wear is too much negative camber and/or toe-out. Camber is super easy to check with a 24" level and a couple small wood blocks. Toe takes a bit more effort but is relatively easy with some dedicated tools, or even the string-and-tape-measure method. Camber changes a bit with ride height, and the bushings in the top links do get tired and allow too much camber especially if you have spacers and/or wide wheels filling the outside of the wheelwells in back. Getting ride height correct and then a perfect alignment will go a long way towards preserving precious rubber.

I have not noticed any tire noise from them. On the '89 with RMB, that really isn't saying much, but the 78 has a Borla cat back and I don't really notice them either.

Let's see, I've had my GTS for 12K miles in 2 years. Just put on my 3rd set of tires soo 6K or 1 year per set of tires.
I've owned Porsches for the last 15 years. I've ALWAYS had to replace my tires once a year, with one exception. I got a set of Fusion M+S for my 90 GT for winter tires, they only lasted about 3K. I decided it was because they were so hard they didn't stick enough and spun too much wearing all that rubber off.

How long is a piece of string?
The number of miles/kilometre you get out of a set of tyres/tires depends on a lot of factors:
1. You driving habits - "peddal to the metal" - fast cornering, and hard braking or doing burn outs, or only occasional spirited driving,
7 How old you are.
If you look after your tyres they will look after you.

Front tires last a season... Rears last a few tanks of gas!
Leaving the Goodyear dealer we signed our name with 2 x's in the parking lot and after a trip around the block returned to ask what the warranty was on the new tires..... after they stopped laughing they said "50 more feet!"
